; the 4th inst, the state of Michigan
w'on a great victory, voting the sa
loon out of twenty of thirty six
counties that voted. This means
that more than three hundred saloons
and six large breweries must close,
and increases the dry counties in
Michigan to forty-seven. In the
s.ate of Illinois, which is regarded
as the world center of the liquor
power, on Tuesday, the 5th inst. the
vote was taken in one hundred and
seventy-eight towns ami cities. Of
these ninety-two voted dry and
eighty-six voted wet. In the West
w'here the states vote by counties
the prohibitionists are winning nine
ty per cent of the victories. In 1908
bars were closed at a rate of thirty
a day. In 1909 bars were closed at a
rate of more than forty a day. We
expect to make it fifty a day for
1910. Mississippi has had state-
wride prohibition since January 1st,
1909. but because of the activity of
the liquor trust in trying to nullify
the law', the people of Mississippi
have organized an Anti Saloon
Leagbe and will put a superintendent
in the field to help the people in their
fight against saloon interference.
Here and now, let me warn our
people against reports often appear
ing in many daily and county papers
usually headed “A press report
sa>8:” etc. Do not forget that many
papers carry pictures of bottlea
daily, for which they are paid hand
somely. These papers often print
such dispatches, but other papers
get despatches giving entirely a dif
ferent version of the same affair.

Our annual memorial services will
be hold at Zion church on Saturday,
May 7th. which will Ik 1 the first Sat
urday in May. The usual invitation
is extended 11* everybody. We pro
pose to add to this invitation, especi
ally all the old Confederate ><>ldiers
in the county to meet with us on that
day. By reason of bid age and in
firmities the time is fast coming
w hen there will not be any, .to meet
this side of the River. As the months
and years come and go the ranks
grow Jthinncr. and it looks as if we
grow fewer the farther apart .we
get hence this invitation. I wish to
state right here that the Sunday
school asked for this privilege, and
w ith a unanimous vote asked them to
meet with us and share in the pleas- i
ures of the day. So old brothers, |
the invitation is of a twofold one.
There are a number of old soldiers
buried in our cemetery; notably
among them are Rev. B. (». Price,
also the Beaches, Hiotts, Ritters.

Press and Standard: Here is a letter
from the Post Office Department
that I wish you to publish for infor
mation of the patrons of rural free
delivery.
"It is the desire of the Depart
ment that you earnestly request pat
rons of rural delivery out of your
offices, to paint their boxes ‘and the
posts to which they are attached a
pure white color. This course, is
pursued, will not only result in bene
fit to the patrons, in serving to pro
tect his box and post from damage
by the weather, but will give all
boxes a uniform color and serve •. to
fix their identity in all parts of the
country as United States mail boxes,
and will give them a much neater
and sightlier appearance than they
now possess. It is also desired that j
patrons be induced to imprfrtt their ]
names and box numbers on boxes in
black letter about two inches high.
It is also desired that you endeavor
to induce road officials to paint upon
the posts qf boxes which are located
at cross roads, (but not attach signs
thereto) the names of the towns or
villages to which the cross roads
lead, with an indicator showing the
direction.
Potts, to which boxes attached,
shall be set in an easily accessibly po
sition at the side of the road and
boxes securely fastened to a project
ing arm of wood, or to a bracket of
band ifon, or if preferred, an auto
matic extension arm may be used.
If you can do so without expense,
bring these matters to the attention
of the public through your local
papers, or otherwise in most desir
able manner.

DEAD.

The death angel visited the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Fletcher and
took from them their dearson. A. M.
Fletcher, w ho was sick only eighteen
days. He bore his sickness Iw-ithout
a murmur. He was twenty-seven
years old had just passed his birth
day two days Ivefore his death. Ail
was done for him that loving hands
I and w illing hearts could do. but wc
I have to submit to the will of<7God.
We loved him well, but God loved
him best.
He leaves a father, pother, three
sisters and five brothers, two broth- '
ers-in-law and one sister-in-iaw. We
do not w-eep for those who have no
hope.
He joined the church at an early
age and tried to do his Master's will.
His funeral services were conducted
by Rev. Montgomery of Henderson
ville, and his remains were laid to
rest in the Black Creek cemetery.
