These figuron show that the town receives from all sources for operating expenses the sum of $2,500. The expenditures for the same time are $3,000. This shows that the expenditures exceed the receipts by $500. , It does not require a very high order of intelligence to conclude that this sort of thing cannot centinue longer. It will not do to run the town in debt; and something should be done either to increase the rev enue of the town, or to decrease the expenditures. »lThe people of the town are not in a frame of mind just now to stand for an increase of the tax levy for money to run the town, however willing they might be to al low an increase for some needed per manent improvements. Therefore, the only course open is to decrease the expenditures. • Let us see how this may be done: 1. Make the mayor’s office non-sal- aried $300 can thus be saved. Some of the best mayors the town has ever had have served.without salary, and doubtless s^good man can be found who will undertake it again. . 2. Make the salary of the police man, say $35 or $40 per month- $360 or $300 can thus be sav^d. Since j the town has gone “dry" the duties | of the policeman have been reduced to a minimunA Indeed we hardly need one except on big days. The town has no money to expend in street work 10 the policeman has "nothing in this line to engage his time. 3.
