a-* Co. R 2nd. tt. C. Cavalry. c<>m-
^manded by the intrepid soldier, Cen.
M C Butler.
It would seem useless to recount
his deeds of daring and valor in that
War, as he was in nearly every im
portant battle fought “l>eneath
; Virginia’s sky,” as well as in many
! in his own State. His book, called.
! “The Autobiography of Arab" (his
war-horse.) published in 1901, tells
j us in fine style of these, in which
Gen. Butler, in the preface says,
I "If you tell the one half of what he
j saw and did, with you as his rider
and constant companion, the world
would be incredulous- and yet it
would be true.” And Gen. Hamp-
l ton says, “Arab saw more of the
War between the North and South.
I am sure, than any other horse.”
Beside being che gallant soldier,
he had many fine traits of head and
heart; he was a great reader and
passionately fond of books; a verita
ble knight in the presence of woman,
w’ould risk his life at any time for
her defense;jand to his friends, and
j they were many, he was always true
; as steel.
1
In early life he married the beauti
ful Cornelia Zealy of Grahamville,
S. C. who bore him several children,
most of whom have long since.passed
away, leaving two sons, resident in
Texas, and two daughters in Geor
gia. By a second marriage he be
came the husband of Miss Fannie
Baggett, who survives him, and be
sides these, he leaves a devoted
sister, Mrs C E Patterson of this
place.
His passing away was very sud
den, on the 17th. He was an inmate
of the Soldiers Home in Columbia,
and his remains, laid out in his Con-
feberate uniform, and looking so
natural, were sent here by express,
and on Friday morning last, they
were met at the depot here by a
large number of his comrades and
friends, also many ladies, and with
loving hands, they laid him in his
last resting place at Live Oak ceme
tery. The funeral services (by re
quest made by him many years ago)
were conducted by Rev. F. O. S.
Curtis, the Chaplain General of the
South Carolina Division, assisted by
Revs. Baker and Boyd.
Sleep on now, friend Prioleau. and
take thy well earned rest!
For you were always true in all the
relations of life; to your family,
to your friends, to your Country,
to your God!
“To liv^ in hearts we leave be
hind—
Is not to die.”
