“FAIR PLAY” DEFENDS CIVIC QUESTIONS ASKED AND AN
LEAGUE. SWERED.
~ ,, f Columbia. Feb. 14. Editor Press
To the Dll f or of In** Pre.>s ami
Standard: *. I ami Standard : Pardon me for a.
In the matter of your editorial 1 few questions concerning the con*
“Men tq Blame,’’ issue of Feb. 2nd. 1
|H*rhap- the lad>t complainant to
whom wiu refer was a tritle hard on
the men and did not justly discrim
inate lietween the men who have
favored the work and aided it linan-j
cialiy and those who have n*it.
But not far from your sanctum,
indited very near to it. is the evi
dence of an attempt on the part of
tin* league to a*Id to the beauty of
Walterboro that has been thwarted,
as I have been informed, by the fail
ure of certain male citizens to make
good what the ladies of the league
regarded as a promise. They say
Who will be the judges or how
w ill the committee lie appointed to
v * t
judg** the tinu-h of the contest?
I understand that there will In? a
com ttfee, but wh*i or by what
meHii- will they be appoiiitid?
Agu in. who is tiu* manager of this
contest?
Will the editog of this p;qH*r have
control?
Does he himself count the votes as
they come each week?
I ask these questions simply be
cause 1 do not live in Colleton and do
they were told by one in authority ! not know anything of the public
that if they did .certain work onitaik, t .(c. t except through the j
Court Hou-e Square the county j columns of your valuable paper,
wotiid do certain other work there,; I &rn interested in the contest,
the result of which Would Ike to make
the temple of justice ami its environ
ment attractive and in keeping with
the dignity of the law which it repre
sents.
Th** good ladies have spent more
than one hundred solid '‘plunks’’ of
their money in carrying out their
part of the work; has the county yet
(tpent a cert towards the part of the
work that it was to do? Moreover,
it was upon the faith of the promise,
as they understood it, that the ladies
spent their hard earned money —they
would not otherw ise have spent it -
is it no£ time for the county to make
a showing? I am not sure that the
ladies have not, in this; specific in-
stance at least, some ground for
their contention that the men are to
blame.
Do you imagine that if the county
had done this work, reiving on the
Civic I«**ague to take it up and carry
it on because of a promise' on it»«
part to do so, do you imagine the
league would thus have kft the
county in the lurch?
Perhaps it may lie said in reply
that the county is not in funds for
this object, or that the party prom
ising as aforesaid had not the author
ity so to do, but why wete not these
objections made known before the
ladies had actually entered on and
done their preparatory work and
sjAent their money? Everyone must
admit that such conditions are dis*
tinctly discourging to the league,
and if they are jj|roing to he ailow«sl
to become permanent. Walterboro
of a hundred years hence will show
no great improvement over the W’al-
terboro of todfy.
Fair Play.
