It is perhaps a little early to ex-
prern a preference for governor, but
of the probable candidate®, we feel
constrained to support Hon. C C.
Feathers tone of I-auren®. Mr.
Featherstnne has been the champion
of the prohibition movement in the
Sute ior many yean, and it withal
a clean high-toned Christian gentle-

good men will doubtless offer, but
at this time we believe Featherstone
is the most suitable man in|the State,
and as we view the matter now. he
is our man for the office.
Th«- on f the Legislature
a p< rntid a committee of senators
and nq u-sentet.ves to investigate
condit ;i <* at the otate Hospital f*>r
the insane. The committee exhaus
tively investigated conditions and
submitted two reports: A majority
report signed by Senators Christen
sen and Bates and Representatives
Harrison and Dick, recommending
the issuance of $1,000,000 bonds, and
calling for the introduction of the
bill for the removal of the institu
tion. a separation of the races, ‘'and
the disposal of the present property.
The minority report signed by Sena
tor Harden and Representatives
, *
Sawyer and Carey, opposed the
bond issue, and favored the purchase
of 1200 acres within ten miles of
Columbia for erecting a Hospital for
the negro patients, leaving the old
n
Hospital for the whites, and adding
some improvements.
The bill embodying the recommen
dations of the majority report was
berg.
The State says:
C. W. Garn* was railroad com
missioner for mx years and was not
infrequently referred to a® the man
of brain* of that board. He passed
out of service and the public forgot;
there wa® no enduring mark left as
a reminder. But Mr. Garris return
ed to the house of representatives.
Many men ac'laim boisterously
about helping the “poor man,” and
doing something for the ••common
people.” but when they get the op
portunity 99out of 100 appear to im
agine that the way to help the “poor
man” is to hurt somebody who in't
poor, and that doing something for
the "common peop.e,” consists in
clubbing somebody not classed with
the ‘’common people.” Of course,
these fail to do anything but gain a
moment’s notoriety, and they pass
from the stage to oblivion.
