WHY NOT ORGANIZE? The suggestion in Rev. Curtis's article published last week, that the Sons and Daughters of Confederate nldiers in this county be organized into Camps and Chapters is a good «ne. Will not someone take the initiative as he suggests and orga nize the descendants of the fast dis appearing Legion of Grey? Will not Rev. Curtis do this? Or Col. C. G. Henderson? Or both of these honored survivors? But let us not wait till the organi zation to begin to send in contribu tions. Send them in at once, either to the editorof this paper or to I). B. Peurifqy. Frank Hammond, who for some weeks has been with The Press and Standard, left Monday for Beaufort where he goes to assume. editorial and business management of the Beofort Gazette. Mr.' Hammond is a newspaper man of .ability and experience. Senator Christenaen. who is the owner and formaR^gmuns the editor of The •f press of business and the inf demand upon his time from the public positions he occupies, has been forced to give up the active management of his paper. We trust that under Mr. Hammond the Gazette will maintain its high standard. respondents over the county for their fidelity to this paper during 1909, and to wish for them a Happy ! New Year. May they Bhve only pleasant news to chronicle in the year 1910. There is unfortunately the opinion in some communities that news items of the community are of no conse quence. This is a mistaken idea. Nothing advertises a community more than to have its happenings chronicled *»ach week in the county paper. So the citizens of every sec tion of the county should see to it that there is a regular correspondent and thatftHis correspondent be known so that items of news may bp furn ished hirn^or her by the people of the community. We should like to have a letter every week from every com munity inithe county, telling the news offthe community while it is If there is a person in any commu nity who wishes to act as our regular correspondent, where we have not one, w« shall be pleased to hear from him or her. Let us know, and join us in our endeavor to make The Press and Standard more newsy than ever before. Success to our correspondents during 1910! LEGISLATURE. TO MEET. Colleton's Solons will leave early next week to be present at the open ing of the Legislature at Columbia next Tuesday. We do not know what they have “up their sleeves" in the way of legislation for Colleton, but we desire to suggest to them that we net*! Very little new legisla tion. It was intended mainly to boost Char leston, which was done in such manner as makes us think, if the business men of Charleston would imbibe from it the optimistic view of the future in store for Charleston that this paper has, it would not be so difficult to attain the greatness naturally Charleston’s.
