Peurifoy, Esq, at the opening of the County Fair he said he would like to see i fitting monument on the Court Houae square erected by the sons : and daughters of the old soldiers in hopor of thosawho “wore the grey.” Th^ suggestion by Mr. Peurifoy has met with such favorable comment that we have decided* to maka an effort to raise a land for this pur pose* We do not know the exact amount that will be needed but we think a very nice monument, suita bly inscribed, can be erected for $1,000. So we are going to try to raise this amount from the readers of the paper and the friends of this cause. This is a purpose which should appeal toj^ll of us, and it should be a very easy matter to raise at least $1,000. The cycje of Father Time has ad ded many victims to those whose lives were sacrificed to the God of War, in devotion to the cause they thought was right, and but few of the stalwart soldiers of ’61 are left now to bear witness to the deeds of heroism done In those days by our gallant soldier boys. THE QUESTION OF GOOD ROADS The question of good roads, or better roads for Colleton is one of great interest to all of our people, because there is not a man, woman or child in the county not directly concerned, because directly affected. The great question now is how to improve our roads. That the pres ent method is not sufficient is evi dent. With 1,100 miles pf public roads in the county, it is an idle dream to expect the chaingang with its antiquated methods of working, to put these into anything like good repair. The $2 commutation road tax, in the hands of overseers in the townships who know nothing of road building, and whose road working force is taken from those w ’ho grud- ingly paid the tax, and then went to “work the road” - in order to “make it back.” amounts to more wasted funds. These statements are facts, and we had just as well face them manfully. i Perhaps if we once realize that these methods are not accomplish ing any permanent improvement, and also that our greatest need just now is for better roads, we may be * • C able to consider some plan looking for a better condition. There are several sections of the county living with a constant feeling of regret that they do not belong to- adjoining counties where they have better roads. Now, if Colleton is to retain these sections, she must show them, that conditions in this county will be as favorable as in another county. The great cry is the condition of the roads, and the ease with which rekdents can drive to the county •sat of the adjoining county over its goad reads. The county seat of CoBetou most be reached as sadly make our roads better? In the first place the road working forces of the county need expert supervision. We need a man in charge of the serious question of road building who is trained to his profe«on. The county employs as its attorney a man learned in the law; for ita physician, a man Ipfuned in med ical lore, and for that important position of road builder she should employ a man learned in the science of road building* In the second place the road working forces must be equipped with improved road working machinery. The county of provide it? To carry on the work he starts it will be necessary to have in charge of it an expert road build er—Will you provide him? Having the machinery and the expert, we must have means to carry on the work—Will you provide it? We shall see. Let us have some states manship legislation and better roads. A. Wichman & Son. rz Ik “Cliristinis” Store Beaufort a few weeks ago purchased over $1,000 worth of road working machinery. Let us see how it pays Beaufort county. In eight hours this machinery qan lay off, grade, clay and roll 400 yards of permanent road bed-in a week one and' one- third miles. In Colleton county the chain gang can do as much work inferior to the Beaufort work in perhaps ten times as long. Now,; this is not intended as a reflection on the efforts of officials and road <» workers in Colleton county. They 1 * are perhaps* doing as well as they can under the system.
