COUNTY UNION MEETNIG
OFFICERS CHOSEN FOR NEXT TERM
AND MUCH BUSINESS TRANSACTED.
URGE ATTENDANCE OF
DELEGATES.
The regular monthly meeting of
the County Farmer’* Union was held
at the court house Saturday. Dele
gate* from seventeen of the locals
were present besides a number of
viating members. Several matters
of importance to the Union were
discussed at the meeting and acted
upon. Plans for carrying out the
work of the Union during next year
were diacuned and it is safe to say
that there will be’’something doin,”
in Colleton from a Union standpoint.
The report of the committee ap
pointed at the last meeting to decide
upon rules governing the crop con
tests in the county was adopted.
The only change made in the sched
ule of prizes a% published last week
was the substitution of pea-vine hay
for pindars. The following com
mittee was appointed to have
charge of contest, prepare and pub
lish rules etc. Jas E Peurifoy, Paul
K Crosby and L H Koger.
President Padgett announced that
he had arranged with Prof.. D. N.
Barrow of Clemson College, who is
conducting farmers’ institutes over
the State, to hold an institute at
Walterboro, Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, Jan. 6, 7 and 8,1910. He
urges every farmer in the county to
be present at this institute, as it will
be of great benefit to them.
The election of officers for the
ensuing term was the last business
of the meeting. Some discussion
was had as to whether or not the
officers of the County Union should
be paid for their services. It was
decided that the only salaried officer
be the secretary-treasurer, who
should receive |5 per month.
There were contests on only two
of the offices that of president and
secretary-treasurer. For the for
mer there were three nominees, L.
C. Padgett, the incumbent. John 0.
Jaques, Jr. and J. D. Risher. The
vote resulted as follows: Padgett, 23;
Risher, 9; Jaques, 2. Mr Padgett
was, therefore, re-elected on the
first ballot.
For secretary-treasurer, there
were two nominees, G W Sweat, the
present incumbent, and W. YV.
Smoak, Jr. Mr Sweat received 11
votes and Mr Smoak, 22.

NT. CARMEL LOCAL ORGANIZED-
Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock, the
county organizer met a number of
the farmers of Mt. Carmel at the
school house and proceeded to orga
nize a local there with 11 members,
i five of whom had taken a demit
i from Stokes local. This local is in
i
the center of a thickly settled com
munity, and it is predicted that soon
this will be one of the best locals in
the county. Meetings will be held
the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 3 p. m.
The following are the officers:

WALTERBORO LOCAL MET.
The Walterboro local met Satur
day afternoon at 3 o’clock at the
court house, with a good attendance
of the members. After routine
matters were attended to and some
candidates initiated the election of
officers was entered into, resulting
in the reflection of all the old offi
cers, but doorkeeper, H. H. Hide-
man. who asked to be excused as he
could not meet every time. Bro.
B. G. Cone was elected to fill the
vacancy.

Considerable comment has been
had recently as to the indifference of
a few of the locals in the county
which are never or seldom repre
sented at the County meetings, and
are seemingly lethargic. These lo
cals should bestir themselves and
not lag behind.
We would ask again, what is the
matter with Williams, Cottageville.
Meggett. Berea. Adams Run and
Fuller? The county meetings are
important and you should have dele
gates present. . ,
