' IP PPI' •' I TvV POEMS Bjl CURE YOUR KIDNEYS. PETER J. MALONE EDITED BY HELEN E. MALONE HIS DAUGHTER. Peter Malone was a boy .soldier, one of that army of brilliant, chival rous boys who fouKht with hearts afire with love for their Southland. When he was eighteen he entered the First South Carolina Regiment of Cavalrv, a regiment which joined Generaj»I>*e in 1HM, and took part - in the famous Maryland and Penn- j sylvania campaign. Rut to this boy I soldier it was not given to die on the field of glory; to him was given the harder and perhaps higher duty: of bearing for ten years tne burden of a wound received on the field of Gettysburg. He died in 1873, a soldier’s death, though “the war drum throbbed no lorger, and the battlefiags were furled.” Of all the 'splendid boys who marched so gaily to war in those terrible days, not one gave promise of richer manhood than Peter Ma lone, the South Carolina boy. For he was a poet, and a poet, at his best, is God’s gift to a people. Like John Keats, Malone died before his genius had reached maturity, and before life had developed his mag nificent powers of mind and heart. Remembering these things, and judging this poet by the dawn-days of his genius, as we judge Chatter- ton and Keats, one says after read ing these beautiful poems, here is a poet. Had he reached maturity, he would now stand with I^nier and Poe, on the heights. ^ And how much this soldier-poet accomplished in the few bright, work-crowded years allotted him’ He taught school two years in Savan nah, he was editor of the Republi can, a Savannah paper; he studied law, and was associate-editor of the Charleston Courier, all the while writing {>oetry that brought the ad miration and friendship of such men as William Hand Crowne, W. Wat kins Hicks and William Gilmore S'mms.. Poetry was the supreme interest in Malone’s life, and the justifica tion of his unfaltering devotion to it lies in this volume of poems collect ed by his daughter, in delicacy of fancy, in purity of sentiment, in grace of expression, in sincerity, in tender and simple beauty, these po$ms are remarkable. Malone's place among Southern lyric poets is a high and permanent one. In such poems as “The West Wind,” “that sings through the yel lowing wheat,” "First Love,” “Autumn,” “Creations,” and many, many others, the spirit of a true poet is revealed, responsive to beau ty, vibrant, full of strength and sweetness. The book will be a de light to all lovers of literature, for it is not every day that so fine a spirit •is vouchsafed to a toiling world.
