WEDNESDAY.’ DEC. 1. 1909.
The judicioua use of a few loads of
clay or gravel on some of our streets
would help some.
Hon J L Robertson, and little son,
of Round, were among those in town
Monday. Mr Robertson was here to
attend a meeting of the delegation,

The regular meeting of the Wom
an's Foreign Missionary Society will
be held Saturday afternoon at the
Methodist church at 4:30 o’clock.
The Civic League has again held a
meetings no we must not joke about
the great work it has before it—
stly before it.
The sound of the hammer is heard
a8 our much needed school building
is being erected—only a dream!
The Law and Order League is at
work now in running to earth sever
al alleged blind tigers another
dream!
There >s some class to the Law
and Order League- same class as
the Civic League, except it is out
classed—the Civic League does meet!
SANTA CLAUS LETTERS.
Already we are receiving letters
addressed to "Santa Cla'is” from
the wee readers of The Press and
Standard. We trust many little hoys
and girls in the County will take
this method of letting this good old
man know w hat they wish for Xmas
prese nts. We have assurances from
Santa Claus that he is going to try
to give all who write him what they
ask. uet your letters come, little
folks.
CONGRATULATIONS.
We are glad to note that our friend
D. L. Smith has been successful in
his‘.race for the legislature from
Colleton county. He is a most ex
cellent gentleman and will make a
fine representative. He was hi the
legislature for one or two terms here
tofore, and served his people faith
fully. We congratulate the people
of Colleton county on returning him
to the legislature.—The (Newberry)
Herald and News.
the law in a milder form. He
convicted of illicit whidcey-selling
and made to serve a short term on
the chaingang. But the experience
did not suffice as a warning. He be
came bitter against constituted au
thority. and desperate when in dan- j
ger of arrest. With well-to-do and j
inffuential relatives, and in a coun
try where it is easy to make an hon- j
est living, he chose to continue the
occupation of blind-tigering in its 1
meanest form. And he continued it 4
when expecting conflict with tHe law. j
When arrest seemed imminent Mes- {
survey killed two men, the younger
of whom was just twdee his age, the
older four score and over. Even;
after that horribly bloody work, the (
(llicit whiskey-dealer was intent up
on saving the alcohol from seizure,
and buried it.
What is the end of it all? After
5*cars of dedging, sneaking, dirty
work, he becomes a convict, doomed j
to t venty years’ servitude. Perhaps
thes ain of murder noes not hu» t’
him, but the condition of the wile
and chdil must touch deeply. And
all for what? Ju^t to make a few‘
dollars dishonestly; just to avoid!
honest work; to do .something crook
ed because it seemed easy. Was it
worth while? Would it have been
worth w hile had there been no trag
edy? Is it ever worth while? Are
there any that envy those who make
piles of dishonest dollars out of the
dispensary and. if they have not al
ready heard the rap of the sheriff’s
deputy upon their door, have been
for years dreading the expected?
What would not those give for a
clean record?
Does it pay to be crooked?—The
Columbia State.
Mr ami Mrs S E Honey, of Lau
rens. w ho were here in attendance
on the Trary-Lucas wedding, re
turned to their home Saturday.

"WOULD DO IT AGAIN.”
During his trial in Walterboro, J.
W. Mesaervey, who was being tried
for the murder.of a constable who
was after him for having contraband
liquor in his possession, declared
doggedly, that he was justifiable in
the killing and would do it again.
The judge has given him twenty
years in the^penitentiary to think
over it. Messervey was probably
arguing from the established basis
of meting out justice in the state
when he said that he would do it
over again.* After a few years re
flection inithe pen, with twenty
hanging over him, he might change
his mind. While men who take
their brother’s lives in thin country
are usually discharged it is not alto
gether a safe thing to do, some ju
ries have peculiar ideas about their
conscientious duty, and occasionally
they find a find a fellow guilty who
counts on being let off. —Florence
