To the Colleton County Fair Asso
ciation.
Gentlemen: I inclose you, here
with, the checks mailed me by your
Anociation for the two premiums
awarded me in fancy work depa&*
ment. 1 trust that this amount may
serve aa a salve for the conscience of
the man, or set of men, who were so
ungallant as to draw this distinction
between Woman and Man,
From all sides 1 have heard that
the premiums awarded the ladies in
the fancy work department were re
duced fifty per cent In not a single
nsfance have I heard of the men's
premiums being reduced. I do not
think that there is a woman in the
county who cares for the paltry cash
consideration, but we are all incensed
at the manner in which we have
been treated.
For one month I devoted my time
and the little talent I possessed to
Jht work assigned to me as man-
agar of the Fancy work department.
I freely drew upon my limited per
sonal means to advertise this Fair
and to interest the women of the
county in the work. 1 drew upon
my physical means to its capacity,
and as to how I succeeded you may
judge for yourselves. As to whether
1 or my co-workers and the balance
f the ladies who exhibited their
work at this Fair have been treated
right, I respectfully refer the matter
to the people of Colleton County.
Yours very truly,
Marguerite E. Harley.
Patterson, and we will gladly furnish
the names of other if
And while we are on the subject, al
low us to say one thing more: Several
pieces of fancy work and some pre-
rves were entered by non-residents
of this county. In every instance
whenrUiis has been called to the
attention of the aamdation the
parties,soexhibitinghavebeennotified
that the exhibits were limited to
bona fide residents of this county,
and the premiums have not been
paid. Either owing to the Superin
tendent’s mistake in sending tags to
those out of the county, or to a mis
understanding of where the parties
lived, several things were allowed to
go on exhibition, and while the
management regrets these mistakes
exceedingly, still in an affair of such
magnitude as the County Fair turned
out to be there were more than eight
hundred entries by over three hun
dred, parties from all over
the county, some of these little
mistakes were bound to occur, and
all that we can say is, that we did
the best we could under the circum
stances. and hope that another year,
those having the fair in charge will
profit by our mistakes and that the
next fair in the coming fall will be
conducted to the entire satifaction
of every one.
T. G. Kershaw,
Superintendent
In reply to the above, or rather in
explanation of the position of the
officers of the Fair Association, the
following is published:
Miss Harley accuses the officers of
the Association of discriminating
against the ladies in the distribution
of the premium moneys, this, as a
fact, is not so, but the officers dis
criminated in favor of the ladies,
and not as Miss Harleys tries to show,
against them: when the judges of
the women’s work came to judge
the work, they called the attention
of the managers to the fact that in
the premium list there were only
two premiums offered for the vari
ous kinds of , embroidery, knitted
work, croched work, etc, while there
was offered on exhibition a half
dozen kinds of each, and they (the
judges) asked that they be allowed
. to classify'the various kinds of work,
and offer premiums for the various
classes. After consultation with the
officers, it was decided that this be
allowed, by the Association, and that
the premiums be cut to 1-2 to allow
for this extra offering of premiums.
For instance, there was on exhibi
tion, under the general name of
“embroidery” several pieces of
drawn work, several of Mount Mel-
lick, several pieces of silk em
broidery, s silk shirt waist em
broidered, several embroidered linen
dresses, and.two or three sets of
pieces, like bureau scarfs, table
scarfs, center pieces, doily and table
mats, etc. Ut, would have been mani-
festedly unfair to all parties to have
undertaken to|judge, we will say a
linen center piece plainly em
broidered, with one of variously
colored silk, on a very elaborate
piece of liner, or again, to have
judged the very handsome pieces of
Mount Mellick in competition with
an embroidered pillow* sham. So the
premiun list was extended to allow*
cash prizes for the various classes,
and this is where probably Miss
Harley has gotten the idea that she
has been unfairly treated. It would
have been much more becoming if
she had gone to one of the officers as
hvae a-great many persons whom
premiums were cut who were, and
are under obligation to her and the
other ladies of the committee who
rendered such valuable assistance to
the Fair by their service*, and asked
, for an explanation. We think that
she could have had the matter ex
plained to her entire aatiafaction.
As for her not hearing of any men's
premiums being cot down, we beg
laave to refer her to any of the fol-
13wing gentlemen, whoae premiums
were cut exactly fifty per cent for
the same reason that all other pre-
mi mums, where it was necessary to
scale the premium list on account of
faulty classification, were reduced:

ACCIDENT TO’W J. NETTLES.
W. J. Nettles of Black Creek who
happened to tie misfortune of hav

ago, is doing very well and will soon
be odt again.
The accident happened on Wed
nesday evening, Oct. 27th. Mr.
Nettles had been working at Dr.
Padgett’s store and was on his way
home. He heard some boys hunting,
and going to where he had cut a
tree, he stopped to look up the hol
low. The tree, which had lodged,
became unsettled and rebounded,
struck him on the leg, breaking it.
The angel of death visited
home on Sunday, August 22nd, and
took from ns our deaf mother. Mrs,
Rem ley. She leaves nine children
and a host of relatives and friends
to mourn her kws. Our father de
parted this life eighteen months be
fore her. and she has lived that pe
riod of time with her children, to
whom she was devoted.
She united with the Methodist
church early in life and was a true
Christian and a dear mother. As
long as her physical strength would
allow she could be found at her place
at church She was sick several
months, and all that willing hands
and loving hearts could do was done,
but to no avail. She was laid to
rest in Guyton cemetery to await the
resurrection morn.
After a long life she laid down the
suffering body and her soul returned
to her Heavenly Jiome above.
\ll her suffering now is o’er.
And our weeping has just begun.
Tho she is in that Heavenly mansion,
Waiting there for us to come.
It was so sad to part from her,
Tho the hour had come.
And we must wait to meet her
In that bright and happy home.
Weep not children, tho you have
laid her.
In that cold and silent jn’sve.
Where dear mother waits to greet
you,
Near the Lamb who died tc save.

No Man is Stronger
Than His Stomach
A strong man is strong all over. No men een be
strong who is suffering from weak stomach with its
consequent indigestion, or from some other diseeae
of the stomach end its associated organs, which im
pairs digestion and nutrition. For when the stomach
is week or diseased there it a loss of the nutrition

when he doesa't sleep wed, has an naoomfurtsMe

And to Relieve the Lame and Aching Back/
You Must First Relieve the Kidneys
There is no question about that
st all—for the lame and aching
back is caused by a diseased con
dition of the kidneys and bladder.
It is only common sense, any way
—that you must cure a condition
by removing the cause of the con
dition. And lame and aching back
ate not by any means the only
symptoms of derangement of tbs
kidneys and bladder. There are a
multitude *of well-known and un-
mlstakabie indications of a more or
less dangerous condition. Some of
these are, for instance: Extreme
and unnatural lassitude and weari
ness. nervous irritability, heart Ir
regularity. "nerves on edge, H sleep
lessness and Inability to secure
rest, scalding sensation and sedi
ment in the urine. Inflammation of
the bladder and passages, etc.
