At the meeting held Friday morn ing, one of our leading citizens made the statemeni: “I would not give a snap for a man’s enthusiasm who does not back it up in a movement such as the Couty Fair, with cold cash.” Colleton county is indeed a big county and has'some wonderful re sources, some developed and some not touched. Now is the time for the resources of the upper part of the county to come together with those of the lower, so that everyone should feel how really great the county is. DR. CARLISLE. £ For more than a generation this superb Christian gentleman, Dr. James H Carlisle, has stood in the fore-front of purity and progress in South Caroliria. Like a giant oak of the forest he has fallen. His place will never be filled, and long it will be ere a figure arises like his to be a guide post to the country of the good, the true, the beautiful. But his place will not be forgotten. His influence still lives and will live forever. Many will there be in that day tol rise up and call him blessed. It island to live such a life that AR who know you will sorrow when you are gone. Such will not be the ease with those who live selfishly or sordidly. We notice that a meeting of the county presidents of the Farmers’ Union is called to meet in Columbia Fair week, and one of the avowed objects of the meeting is to discuss the advisability of establishing a coastal preparatory school for Clem- son College in .one of the counties along the coast. This is directly in line with our recommendations as to establishing such a school at Young’s Island, and we trust the Farmers’ Union in that section will have re presentation at that meeting and endeavor to secure this school. Now is the time to begin, if it is hoped to capture this school. they can cease their prophecies, for it will surely be held, and more than this it will be held every year from now on. The organization is a per manent one, and is composed of men who are determined to make the Annual County Fair for Colleton the equal of any in the State. Another duty must, however, be performed, and that is a duty of every citizen in making exhibits. Let it be understood distinctly that tluit this is not a fair for any man or set of men. It is a fair for Col leton county, and to succeed it must be supported by every citizen. It is not necessary that every person subscribe to stock, but everyone should give it his or her moral sup port, and presence. In honor of Miss Corine Blanken ship, Mr and Mrs E M Jones enter tained at cards last Friday evening at their beautiful residence on Bridge Street. The house was beautifully decorat ed with palms, ferns and cut flowers, and at about half past eight the couples began to arrive, remaining until twelve. The guests were met in the hall by Mrs Jones, Miss Blankenship and Miss Mace, who as sisted in receiving the guests. Mrs Jones was beautifully gowned in a black satm elaborately trimmed in jet, and Miss Blankenship, a typical brunette, was daintily clad in a pink cloth, trimmed with jet. Cards were indulged in until about eleven o’clock, when the refresh ments were served consisting of a salad course which in turn was fol- . sum mi. N A FHE COUNTY FAIR. I It is very gratifying indeed to see « the unaminity of interest being taken in the County Fair just now , by all classes of our citizens. This is as it should be, for there is no movement that should be supported by every man, woman and child in the county of more importance than the aasemblingvof our people to gether m an effort to promote com petition it production. This the County Fair will do. To produce two ears of corn where only one grew before is a worthy ambition. This ambition will be stimulated by a little competition.
