RUFFIN NEWS.
[Written for last Week.)
Ruffin, Oct. 7,- Special:
.was a surprise party given at the
home of Elias Crosby a few weeks
ago. Among those who attend<*d
this party were the children and
grandchildren and two sisters and
one brother, also many relatives and
friends. They all met at about 3 o’
clock, and everyone enjoyed
themselves very much the men
went and cut a bee tree, which af
forded them much sport. At about
8 o’clock all were invited to the room
where there were a table spread
with delicious cake, of which the
crowd partook heartily.
M. A. Crosby and family visited
relatives on Black Creek last Satur-!
i day and Sunday.
o Mra. Elizal>eth Breston spent two
weeks with her nephew, M. A. Cn>s-
i by. Her visit here was very much
enjoyed.
I J. B. Kinard and family spent
| Saturday and Sunday last with A.

Joe Brant of the Poor Farm was
among us the tirrt of the week. We |
are always glad to have him with us.

The year 1909 has been a strenuous
one for the farmers all over the
South. In every few sections has
anything like normal conditions
prevailed. In the West excessive
f» drp ith. in the Fast excessive rain,
followed by drouth. The great
Fmeiswi says: "1 ought tobeeiijial

\ ' r v lii. h -taedard. hut the farmer
-l. u!d learn to he e i v ual to the con
ditions and emergencies that snr<- 1
r und him in hi< work. We have
n nvr s**en such striking contrasts as
in !h"9 Why” We have hail plenty
of moisture, and moisture coupled
w th manure ami cultivation gives
u> tiie maximum yields; while with
the lack Oi-these -he simply ruins
the croj»s. You will see one man
who had in only fifteen - or twenty
aere< to the plow and he had a fine
c ep. His neighbor who endeavored
to cultivate thirty tof forty was lost
in the grass. So it seems to us that
one forcible lesson to be learned
from 1909. is not to undertake to
cultivate so much land to the plow.
Our landlords should encourage
t »eir tenants to cultivate less.
Then we should learn a lesson as
to the price of cotton. As soon as it
was definitely known that we tad
r duced the area 8 per cent., cotton
went up. When it was further
: known that Providence had reduced
1 the vield by sending excessive
drouths in Texas, and rains east of
the Mississipdi, then prices went to
a still higher level. Then w’hat
should we learn? That it is up to us
to regulate the supply according to
the demand at a fair price. W’e are
not against warehousing and hold
ing for better prices; these are
means that all who are able should
employ; but we want all in “The
Union” and cut of The Union” to|
note how much easier it is for us to
!getago«d price for cotton when
natural conditions favor us, than
when they are against us. There is
I a right and natural way to do thinys
i anil a wrong and unnatural way to
do them.

and strain that attends his neigh
bors. The demands for foodstuff is
universal. We have a large retwly
demand right on our own farms;
! then why can not we grow it as
! cheaply as some other Northern or
Western farmer? It is simply the
learning how. and doing it. We see
various farmers who are growing
; corn as cheaply as any Western far
mer, and m^ny raising cattle and
m»g.s as cheaply as any Northern far
mer. You can never do it until you
begin and learn how.
We have l>een simply astonished
to see how well some farmers have
come out under the adverse condi
tions surrounding us this year. It
shows that many are becoming more
efficient farmers. We certainly con
gratulate all such. To those who
have failed we would say, do not
give up; misfortunes attend the lot
of all, simply resolve to try again
and to learn to do better. The
general condition of our farmers is
far from gloomy. Our people are
building upon a firmer foundation,
and the shocks of panic and the
untoward seasons w ill endanger us
less and leaf. The farmer who is not
badly in debt is grot hurt; so w’e
must learn to get out and stay out
of debt. Half of our ills disappear
w’hen we we get on a /rash basis*.
Wt? heard one farmer down in
Decatur county say of his neigh
bor: ”He has enough money in the
bank to grow another crop’if he did
not get a dollar out of this one.
And he made all his money farming;
he even bought his farm on a credit
and made the money writh which to
pay for it.” Adverse seasons do not
injure this class of fanners very
much.
What encourages us most is to see
the deep and almost universal in
terest that is being aroused for bet
ter farming in the South. This
, spirit pervades all classes. In talk
ing to a merchant who has made
money selling provisions tsP farmers
on time, he said, "1 am anxioas
see our fanners grow their o
. corn, because I know it mesas pros-
I perky for them. I once thought it
you to rev e v the situation and if
possible to improve your ways in
accordance to the lessons to be learn-
en therefrom.— Southern Cultivator.

THE JOHNSON’S CHILL & FEVER TONIC CO.,
SAVANNAH. GEORGIA. _
Walterboro S. C., October 9, 1908.
On August 30, ’08, 1 contracted cold and developed Grippe and
was laid up fiive weeks. My bronchial tubes were badly af
fected, which caused me to cough continually and prevented
my sleeping at night. I tried all the old remedies which usually
gave me relief but failed.
Johnson’s Chill and Fever Tonic was recommended to me as a
guaranteed cure for grippe and colds and I was pursuaded to
try it. After taking it according to directions for one w’eek, I
found myself entirely cured of my cold and grippe, and my sys
tem in first-class condition. I regard it as one of the best medi
cines I have ever used ir mv family and can cheerfully recom
mend it to anyone suffering from a like trouble or general
debilitated system. B. G. BENTON
