WEDNESDAY. OCT. IS. 1909.
Honesty is the best policy.
We are publishing this week the
report of the county hoard of pom-
miwoners for the month of August.
This will be interesting reading for
our subscribers and we trust that
every item will be carefully Kcruti-
niacd, and if any of them are not as
they should be, we are sure the
board will be glad to have their at>
tention called to those that are
wrong. If you believe work done in
your community has been charged
for excessively, or the labor has not
been performed, it is your duty to
let it be known. If you do not give
thii information then you should
keep quiet and not criticize the
board or any member of it. Let us
all be fair about this, andfremember
the (k>lden Rule. «

The dishonest man flourishes at
times as the green bay tree and
seems to prosper, but alas! the time
is sure to come when he will suffer
keenest remorse, and he will be sorry
for his ill-gotten gain. How many
men who have thus pfosjHTed would
gladly go back to the days of their
youth and in poverty and olwcurity
go again over their lives, rather than
in dishonesty live in pomp and splen
dor. This though is suggested by
the sorrow and suffering caused the
innocent loved and loving ones, as
well as the remorse of the guilty, in
the recent proceedings against those
who prospered in the days of the
State dispensary and whose sins have
found them out. They are now pay
ing the price no matter what the
verdict of the jurors.
mittee in charge of the arrange
ments. As a rule people put off
doing things to aid in a public enter
prise such sn this till the last minute
which makes it very hard for those
in charge. Persons who intend
making exhibits should notify Supt.
o
Kershaw at once, so he can arrange
for them.
Another thing, a good many of
those who subscribed stock have not
paid their 50 per cent assessment,
we are told, and it is'necessary that
this should be received at once.
The County Fair is going to be a
grand success, but it will be grander
if ever} one would join hands and
work to make it so.

We would Kke to have correapon-
, dentTromJevery school in the county,
and will gladly publish all honor
rolls, programs, school news when
ever sent in. In exchange far an
occasional letter from any school in
the county, we will be glad to send
the school The Prem and Standard
free while it is in session. We Would
suggest that the teachetf have the
pupils in the higheiferades to write
up the news of the school or commu
nity as an exercise in composition,
selecting the best and sending to us
once a week or every two weeks.
This was done in several schools last
session and proved interesting read
ing. and very helpful to the school.
So if you wish|to start a reading
table with The Press and Standard
send us a card and your school will
be entered.
Another suggestion to live teach
ers over the county, and all teachers
are live teachers; why not start a
reading room in your school? An
entertainment, or 5 cents a . scholar,
will give you funds with Which to
subscribe to a daily newspaper for
aix months, and rhaybe several maga
zines. These could be read at re
cess, or taken home at night by the
pupils in turn. Or perhaps, the
teacher could read the daily paper
«nd each morning give ten minutes
to reading some leading news article,
or a brief summary of the news of
the world,. Cultivate the leading

SOLICITOR PEURIFOY
TRIUMPHS.
Solicitor Peurifoy called the bluff
of Mayor Rhett and The News and
Courier in reference to thejndict-
ments against violators of the dis
pensary law in.Charleston. There is
consternation in the camps of the
“Broad Street gang” over the out
come of the well laid plan of the
Mayor and his colleagues to entrap
the young solicitor. “The fowler
got caught,’'and now those who so
recently and blatantly paraded as
enforces of the law have been forced
to take a back seat. The presiding
judge has sustained the solicitor at
every point. It was shown clearly
that it is not the duty of the solicitor
to turn detective and hunt up evi
dence, but that his duty ends when
he prepares indictments in the regu-
\
lar way and uses every endeavor to
protect the interests of the State.
We have no doubt that Solicitor
Peurifoy will do his full duty, and
one hears everywhere that he is mak
ing good.
Of course no one for a moment
believes thatch Charleston’s Mayor
really desires the dtapersary law en
forced, and hia recent moves were
only a fiasco. Before trying to con
demn the solicitor for alleged faiuure
to do his duty, the Mayor should
“sweep before his own door.’’. We
should like to have him quote the
Statute giving him authority to im-
V
pose a fine of $50 every three months
on notorious blind tigers, and then
protecting them from his raiding
squalst Truth of the matter is, we
do not believe Solicitor Peurifoy
would exceed his duty if he were to
hand out indictments against the
Mayor and chief of police for failure
to do their duty, and for flagrant
violation of the law.

DROWN’S PRIZE PUZZLE.
Seldom has a little thing created
more interest over the county than
the prize word puzzle being run in
the advertiaement > of' the Brown

in thia paper. It has overshadowed
the Cook-Peary controversy, the
County Fair, and even the price* of

Everyone you meet asks “How many

have come in, the numbers ranging
from 1 to 1500. Mr Brown expresses
himself as being delighted with the
