Wert* you ovor in a ecurt room? When a trial was goiritf on; The juilges sitting on the U-nch, And tht' jury had been drawn. The prisoner seated in the dock. Under the watchful sheriffs eye; The clerk is writing at his desk, And the bailiffs .standing hy. When up jumps a fussy lawyer. May it please Your Honor, says he, 1 am*the attorney in this ease. And must try and earn my f«*e. fall the witnesses, Mr. Sheriff. And I’ll find out what they know. Jf they do not testify as I wish Well! I’ll have to make it so. The first, an old man of gentle mein. And of noble character as plainly seen; An open countenance as noon-day sun And known as honest by every one. His statement is twisted and turned a’wry, And the lawyer gloats on his own- made lie. The old man’s character is torn in shreds. Till score he dare lift up his head. The next, a pretty maiden fair, Of pure and modest face, Is put upon the torture rack In the poor old gentleman’s place. Her words, like his, are miscon- strutted. And so twisted and misplaced. That the tears course down her whit ened cheeks. To think she’d been so disgraced. So on it goes throughout the list Of the witnesses to be heard. The lawyer makes them all out liars, And they dare not say a word. And says he, gentlemen of the jury, All these witnesses lied like fury; So take the case, and remember me— 1 also lied, but I earned my fee. chorus: Everybody lies but the lawyer; Not only me, but you. Jonesville, Oct. 4. Special: We are glad to say that our roads have been worked from Sniders on down to Salkehatchie depot. Mr. Nettles, who was in charge of this work, fur lud over ag«>od job to the County. We had the pleasure of seeing our supervisor out in this country the other day much improved, and we hope his health will soon be restored to him again. Your correspondent] was a visitor to the closing exercises of the school taught by Miss Sue Hanes, and see ing in the columns of your paper of the beautiful description of these exercises, your correspondent wishes to say that he was very much pleased to see what an active part was taken by the patrons and much more by young ladies and men and the smaller children, in reciting their pieces as the teacher would call them up. The crowd was so large that they did not have hiuse room, and owing to the inclemency of the weather a greater portion of the visitors were compelled to stay until morning. The hospitality extended to them by Mr. and Mrs. Nettles made all the visitors feel at home. We an glad to say that Miss Haines deserves much credit in taking so much interest in her scholars. At these exercises everybody drank so much lemonade and ate so much cake that we think that all had a good time. There was an Jice cream festival give at our church, Green Chapel, a short time ago, for the purpose of raising money to pay on our church organ. A large crowd was in attendance and a good sum was raised. Revs Penny and Rhode have just closed a meeting, and we believe a great deal of good was done. W’e hope soon to have Bro. Penny back to give us another week’s meeting. Hon. W. C. Brant was down last week doing some work in'connecting ADVERTISING ADAGES. Although some of the more critical minded among the sons of Adam may not subscribe to all the proi*osi- tions laid down in the following Ad vertising Adages contributed by Tudor Jenks to Advertising and Sel ling they are nevertheless so smart and thought provoking as to merit the News’ hearty pass-them-along compliment: Advertise first then theorize. Advertising never takes a day off. Sweet are the uses of advertising. No day without an advertisement. The path of the purse is publicity. Don’t let the public guess: tell them. Advertise today, and sell tomor row. No man buys what he never heard of. Trust in Providence, and printer’s ink. Poor advertisements are better than none. Advertising that costs nothing is worth it. If ashamed of your business, keep it dark. There is nothing so “lucky” as ad vertising. Plant advertisements that sales may grow. Tibet doesn’t advertise; but this is America. You know of P. T. Barnum? Queer, isn’t it? Honesty is the best policy—with advertising. If your business is honest, why make it a secret? The best advertising is the cheap est in the end. Flowers may blush unseen—you must advertise. You know what is advertised and so do others. If you don’t advertise your busi ness the sheriff may. Fishing without bait is business without advertising.
