R. C. Briggs, aged 54 years, died
suddenly at the Southern passenger
station Saturday night July 10. He
had arrived from Charlotte on train
No. 41 and just as he stepped from
the platform of the train he fell to
the ground and expired in a few ;
minutes.
Mr. Briggs had been a resident of
Spartanburg for many years and was
well liked by all who knew him.
was for a long number of years con
nected with the Spartanburg post-
office, and in all of the departments
in which he worked he made a com
petent and polite clerk. Many years
ago, when the postoffice was located
in a little wooden building on North
Church street it was Mr, Briggs’
duty to meet the trains and receive
the mail pouches. In the darkest
hour of midnight and freezing weath
er he was always faithful to his
duty. As the postoffice increased in
size he was promoted to delivery
clerk, which position he held until
a few years ago.
The funeral was held at the resi
dence Sunday afternoon at 6:30
o’clock, Rev. R. S. Truesdale offici
ating. The interment was in Mag
nolia cemetery- The funeral was at
tended by a large number of friends
and relatives.
Besides his wife, the deceased is
survived by the following children:
Mrs. S. G. Hawkins, M. R., R. W.
and Misses Sarah and Lois Briggs of
this city, Mrs. C. A. Graves of Wal
terboro, C. C. Briggs of Asheville
and A. P. Bri r gs of Kings Mountain
