This decision will be made by 129 of her citizens who were interested enough to secure town registration certificates. That the decision will be in favor of the bond issue we earnestly believe, for we think the majority of our citizens have this much of public spirit, and this much concern for the future welfare of the town. Should this bond issue fail progress in Walter boro will be set back more than a generation. The verdict of the voter is ex progress? We desire to call attention to the following quotation from the recent presentment of the grand jury: “We desire to bring to the atten tion of the supervisor a very objec tionable condition which #evails in the water closet situated in the new* wing of the court house. This closet uses. He says the taxable property of the town is $.‘>1(»,81T> which will 1 allow bonds to the amount of $25,- 345,20. The auditor’s books for 1!K)S shows $395,620 which will allow $31,649.60. The books for 1909 are not yet complete. These figures do not include the town’s part of In surance and Express Companies etc. which will run our totals up to over $400,000. Quite a difference, eh? Now no one contemplates putting $20,000 in a school building alone. This will be the total available for building and equipping a school for whites, and removing the old build ing and refitting for negroes. Now, how in the name of common sense, can this be done for less? Walter boro has voted for a High School, and the purpose of some of the citizens, ar\d the Trustees is to make this a High School for this part of the State where boys and girls from situate in the town of Walterboro, county and State afore.^aid, measur ing HU feet on east and west lin<*s, and 210 feet on the north and south lines: and bounded, north by (J W Butler, formerly Rivers, east by street, south by Johnson, and west by lot of Mrs A B Graves. This closet should not be where it is at all, and should never have been put there. The treasurer needs this room and for obvious reasons this closet should be removed entirely. We trust “a word to the wise will be sufficient.” Another thing we desire to call to the attention of the authorities is the filthy condition of the corridors and corners in and about the court house. Unless we are mistaken a janitor is paid to keep these places clean, and if men wish to be pigs the janitor should keep their sty clean. “A word etc.” other counties may come to be pre pared for college. Now, really and truly we are going to find $20,000 too small a sum for this purpose, won’t we, Captain?
