The Edisto Literary Society, an organization which haa been in exis tence aboutjsix months, gave its first picnic at the Edisto School House Saturday, July *‘trd. This picnic was attended by about two hundred and fifty persons; the feature of the day being a debate on the subject “Re solve!, that Capital Punishment should be abolished.” The speakers on this subject were: affirmative, W. C. Bailey, A. (J. Yarley, A. V. Rickenbaker and W. W. Smoak, Jr. Negative, L. G. Yarley, J. W. Boat wright, 0. S. Hill, and Hon. J. L. Robertson. These speeches were well prepared addresses, claiming the attention of the audience from start to finish. The subject matter on debate was thoroughly threshed out by the different speakers. The fol lowing gentlemen acted as judges: C. N. Langdale. H. W. Robertson, A. A. Bailey, William Westbury and J. C. W- Canady; their decision, after weighing the argument ren dered, was in favor of the negative. The meeting was presided over by the President of the Society, J. P. Remley. The other officers of the society. Vice-President B. A. Ben nett, Sec. J. W. Boatwright. Treas. J. S. Bailey, rendered valuable as sistance to the president in carrying out the program. This society meets every other week on Saturday night and has done much in creating a literary life in the community. As -an out growth of the work of the society, a nourishing Sunday School has been organized, which meets every Sun day afternoon at 4 o’clock, and nas a membership numbering fifty. The following are the officers of the Sunday ‘ School; Superintendent, W. C. Bailey, Assistant Superinten dent. A. G. Yarley, Secretary, J. F. Strickland, Treasurer, H. P. Remley. A. G. Yarley is teacher of the Bible Class. Other teachers are Mrs. J. F. Strickland, Mrs. J. S. Bailey, Miss Iris Yarley and J. S. Bailey. This Sunday School meets at Canady’s School House.
