On another page of this paper is found the report of the investigators who for several weeks have been en gaged in checking the books of the county officials, going back ten years. This report will furnish interesting reading for the people of the county. It is the first real peep into the af fairs of the county they have hail in | sometime. We say let the people know \\hat their servants are doing with the resources of the county en trusted to their care. Rut this is not enough. At best this report is the result i»f only a su perficial examination. It skims over conditions but does not go deep enough into the records. The sub ject matter of claims paid, a com plete verification of all figures and records, with a classification of all claims against the county, should now be gone into. Hooks and vouch ers, thrown around like so much waste paj>er, should Ik* gotten in •S, shape and classified. The work of • u*h year should be gotten together and classified. The work of each year should be separated and preserved for future use or reference. The fi- , nancial records of the county, should be so kept that it will never again be necessary for investigators to spend months getting up a state ment of where the county stands. Is the settlement of the Comptroller General a farce? If a settlement by him does not settle why have it? How many years must elapse before the responsibility of an officer cease? Anotheivthing, be not too hasty in judgment on those found wanting in this report. They have not yet been heard. Between these dates there lived one. Joseph William Saunders near Doctor’sCreek Church in Colleton County, S. C. He waa the oldest son of Griffin G. and Elizabeth Goodwin Saunders. He was trusted, honored and loved by a large family of brothers and sisters. Joe went out among the first vol- - unteers in the late war between the States and served faithfully and well during those four terrible years. In February 1805 he was captured at Town Creek, N. C. and was taken to Point Lookout as a prisoner. His captors were spoken of only in terms of praise for their kindness and con sideration. The odious weeks of imprisonment were whiled away by making trinkets, which were bought from the prisoners by lady visitors from Baltimore. On his way home, in company with a rumber of his comrade*, when in need of food, he would make out requisitions for it sending them to the nearest yankep .commissary where they were always honored. In 1&66 he was married to Miss Rebecca dams with whom he lived happily for more than forty years. Their home was blessed with’ nine boys and girls. A sad and tender experience in their lives was the death of their oldest son. Benj&man while yet a little boy. He was an affectionate husband, his wife a sweetheart all the time, a kind and loving father, his children delighted in his company, and cer tainly. his seemed a happy home. Hospitality was one thing in which he excelled one felt in his home wel come at all ease. ^ In the chorch of which he was a consistent member, he wielded no ■mall influence. HALL DEBATING SOCIETY. The Hall debating society met Saturday night. An interesting program was carried out, including a debate on the subject: Resolved that the men who sell whiskey, do more evil than the men who drink it. The decision of the judges was in favor of the negative. The speakers were: affirmative, O. S. Hill. J. B. Beach, and J. B. Rinse; negative, 1. B. Weeks, E. W. Garris and A. V. Rickenbata4. The general discus sion was joined in by B. G. Weeks on the affirmative and E. O. Garris on the negative. MRS M A SANDERS DEAD. Mrs. Mary Ann Sanders, an aged and estimable lady, died at the home of hor son. H. B. .Sanders of Toogoo- doo, Saturday and was buried Sun day at Sandy Dam church in the presence of a large number pf rela tives and friends. The funeral was held at her late residence by Rev. ! J. S. M. Finch. Mrs. Sanders was the wife of the late T. Clark Sanders, and was in her 76th year. She^had been ill of paralysis for five months during which time she endured much suf fering patiently and with Christian fortitude. ^ . .
