Clarence Caldwell of Lodge spent
Saturday night in town, as the
guests of T. A. Black.
Messrs H. D. Padgett and J. W.
Crosby have opened an ice cream
parlor here, which will be quite an
addition, as well as a source of great
pleasure during the summer.
It realy seems like our people are
just realizing that we are living in
an up-to-date age. I know we have
some of the best and most congenial
people up here you ever saw-; but
they just wont have enough get up
abt ut them. The great art of life
c u sists in fortitude and persever
ance. 1 have rarely seen any man
wh-' devoted himself to the studies
and duties of any profession who did
uot lake fair and honorable op-
nortunities, when such were pre-
s rated, fail. The falling behind,
more frequently arises from lack of
preseverance and skill. Life, young
friends is like a game of cards.
Our hands are alternately good or

not so, for in the long run the skill

game. Then let us not be dis
couraged. but ply our studies hard

A BIRTHDAY DINNER.
Melville, June 18. Special:—
A birthday dinner was given by
Mr and Mrs John Hill in honor
of their youngest daughter, Miss
Winnie, a charming young lady
of seventeen summers. This
was quite an enjoyable occasion
to all. Early that morning some
of the best fishers went down to
the waters near White Hall, and
came back loaded with fish.
Lemonade was seived plentifully
and music was enjoyed all the
m n mug. A little after one
o'clock a grand and bountiful
dinner was eprend under the
tc-iiutiful shades of some grand
otks in the yard. It would be a
hud matter for me to try to
m-ntion the eatables on this
Lug table, and il was hoitnied
w.:h the presence of Mrs
mother, Mrs William fcmioak, a
very old lady.
The evening, was spent with
mu ic and playing by the young
people, with the older people en
joying themselves just the same.
About four o’clock cake was
s rved of which all partook
heartily ; then came the time for
all to dep-trt, delighted with the
day’s enjoyment and hoping that
rue time will sootf' come again
when we can all have a day like
this.
