INTEMPERANCE.
Drinking liquor it the folly of
man. How many homes hate
been made unhappy by it? How
many dear wives and mother’s
hearts have been saddened by it?
So many lives have bten driven
to destruction just by drinking
whiskey.
Oh, how sweet the parting in
the afternoon -when the kind
husband starts out pronr ising his
loved ones that he will soon re
turn . They sit waiting and
watching for him till tho last
beam of sunshine fadeth in the
weatern skies. He comes at last,
but how does he come? Drunk,
drunk, and perhaps cursiog in
the most evil manner, accusing
his dear wife of things she knows
nothing of.
How dreadful it is for a young
wife to be made miserable and
unhappy by her dear husband
who has become a drunkard. Ah,
how aad!
As a loving mother was watch
ing by the bed side of her only
ehild, he said, u tell me true, do
drunkards go to Heaven?”
“There is for them no promise,”
waa the wretched mother’s
answer. “Then 1 shall never
tee papa again. Tell him good
bye, good-bye forever.” Alas
where was the father? Away
from home drank. Young men
and boys, are yon going to dis
grace yourselves jnst by drinking
liquor? Many people have been
disgraced and led to rain by it*
Any man, let him be young or
old, that has to take a drink of
liqnor before talking to his best
gill, that is bis sweetheart, ho is
net worthy of one; and it is a
shame for any girl to continue
talking with a man while he is
drinking, if she knows that he is
drinking. Heed to this warning
never marry a man that gets
drank. Man that love whiskey
think that there is no harm in
drinking it; bnt if they will not
listen to the jnst, 1st them go on
anp perhaps some day they will
be convinced, aad learn that it
is not doing them any good at
all, bnt only leading them to
drunkard’s grave.
•Inst for fun the yonog no
followed after a drunkard, and
jnst for fun he took r drink, time
after time he took those si
drinks, and what became of that
youth? Ha became a drunkard;
bees ms of his &
fibsoon died with
sari bees ass her be-
Sty*! sea had become a drunk
ard. One dunk calls for
Mother;tot yooag man never
take one drink, aad than yen
to want
Leaf# that
C is for cider.
To drink it is wrong.
Though at first very weak,
It is soon very strong.
D is for drunkard,
Just look at his nose,
How red are his eyes,
And how dirty his clothes!
E is for evening
When he goes out to drink!
What he knows does him harm,
If he only would think.
F is for fountain
So merry and clear.
Who only drinks water
Has nothing of fear.
G is for gin
That makes people lazy.
Then cross to their wives.
And finally crazy.
H is for hard times
Which surely will come
When s man spends his money
For nothing bur rum.
I is for a inn.
Like a rat trap, no doubt.
When once you get in,
It is hard to get out.
J is for jail,
Where a drunkard is kept
Till the fumes of his liquor
Away he has slept.
K is for knowledge,
Of which little remains.
When he puts in his mouth,
What runs off with his brains.
L is for liquor,
Whatever the name,
The taste, or the color.
They are all the same.
M is for monkey,
Much wiser than man,
If you once get him drunk
You can’t do it again.
N is for Noah.
Who planted the vine
And, bow sad is the warning!
Got drunk upou wine.
0 is for orphan
And thousands are made
Every month in the year
By the rum sellers trade.
P is for pledge,
All good children should take.
If you can’t sign your name
Your mark you can make.
Q is for quarrel,
Look sharp and you'll find
In almost every quarrel,
There la liquor behind.
R la for rum ‘
And for rum sellers too;
With one or the other,
. Have nothing to do.
S is for snow
Where the poor drunkard lies
Oversome by the liquor,
And freezes and dies.
T is for tippler
Who grows worse and worse,
Till he finds, to his sorrow.
Not a drop in his purse.
U iafor union,
In unio» there is strength.
With the old and the young.
We will conquer at length.
V ia for victim.
Who staggers around
Till ha fall s in the river.
Where of course he is drowned.
W is for woes
On the rum sellers trade.
And the curses that rest
On the wrecks he has made.
X is for Xerxes,
A great army had he.
But theSurmy of alcohol
la larger to see.
Yvis for youth,
Darling, Oh! forbear.
Lest the love of strong drinks,
Should thee also ensnare.
Z is for zealous,
Which I hope you'll all be, ^

Our country Is free.
