Ruffin, Round, CotUgeville, Hendersonville and other places in the county to use aoine of it? This is the way to fight the mail order houses? Try it. THE MAY FESTIVAL. The echoes of the May Festival have not all died oyt yet. The wonderful success of the day is still the talk of the town and county. People everywhere are loud in their praises of the success of the parade. The merchants of town all report a big day’s business, and the splendid show and fautless parade is the talk of the county. This shows what we can do, but just you wait till we have the County Fair. Ham mond. for which we desire to vote. We know something of the amount of work it was necessary to do to carry out an affair of so much magni- tude, and the burden of it fell on the president of the League. That she was able to perform this task is shown by the flawless arrangement which was carried out without a hitch, and resulted in such a big day for our town- and county. This example of unselfish performance of duty, should be a lesson to the League, and prove an incentive to similar effort on the part of all the members. If this can lie accomplish ed through the efforts of one untir ing worker, ably assisted, w hat is there not within the range of poe- sibility for the League if all the members are similarly imbued?. HURRAH FOR WALTERBORO! Now, we just can’t Jielp feeling good and a bit joyous, and, we shall not try to hide the fact that we are *‘tickled nearly to death." Here air, and three men! Yes, there are men right in the town of Walterboro who conduct businesses, and because they disagree with the political views of the editor of this paper to be specific- they will not advertise 1 in it. Is this business judgment? What has the views of the editor of the paper got to do with the value of the paper as an advertising medium? Advertis ing is a matter of business, and should be done in a business way. Circulation is what counts. The number of people who read an ad vertisement determines whether or not it will pay. Editorial opinions do not count in value of space, ex cept our humble opinion is that a paper with editorial convictions and backbone enough to express them is more eagerly and more widely read, and is consequently a better ad vertising nudium. Suppose every business man in Walterboro should use newspaper space liberally, would not -the volume of business done in town be largely increased? According to the last issue of The Press and Standard there are only twenty business houses in town. The reader at Hardescramble or Rum Gully wish ing to go to a business town would hardly come to Walterboro on the strength of the advertisements in this paper. Suppose instead of the twenty businesses advertised the sixty-five separate and distinct busi nesses in town should use a regular amount of space in this paper would not the out-of-town, and in-town, reader, for that matter, conclude that almost every want of the ordin- tU> • ary man could be supplied right here in town? What would be the result? Now, honest, would not the business of the town be doubled? Another thing: This paper now sells space to more out of town busi nesses than to in town businesses. Some of these advertisers have been using our space for years, ao it must pay them. If the businesses at home would contract for our space we could afford to cut out till tMa for- of our common interests than has this paper.
