'JO THE DEFEND \NTri A HOVE
NAMED:
Yon ere hereby summoned >ind
quiri-d u> answer the complaint
We desire to congratulate
Civic league of Walterboro on the
wonderful success of the May Festi
val. The ladies of this League, un
der the leadership of its president,
Mrs John W Hammond, have shown
what* can be accomplished by intelli
gently directed effort. This proves
the way for a county fair association,
which is one of the certainties of the
rear future. Of course this is good,
and proper. Amen.
WHY NOT ORGANIZE?
To our mind there is a very fine
opening just now for some work to
be done either by the Town Council
or a revivified Business league or
Chamber of Commerce. If Walter
boro is ever to amount to anything
she must put aside some of the
monumental selfishness and jeal
ousies of many of those who are
r
looked upon as her business men.
We have the field to do some good
work; we have men with the ability
to do, but there is lacking that unity
of purpose essential to success in
anything. Why not get over this
and DO something?
Just now there is a possiblity that
Walterboro might interest a rail
road that is being built in this county
to come to Walterboro, and give us
an outlet by way of water, thus
secring competitive freight rates.
Another thing: Very soon there
will be built a trolley line from Sav
annah to Charleston, which will p«a*
somewhere not .many miles off from
• •
Walterboro. A little combined
effort on the part of an organization
of our business men would put them
in touch with these proposed means
of transporUtion, and we might
thus unbottie our town and county.
