Apr. 17, Speciak-L. H. Zeigler, who has charge of the chain gang near Smoaks, came home today on a visit to his family. Mr and Mrs P. G. Hiers and child ren from Smoaks. are visiting rela tives and friends here. James Sanders of Stokes visited J. J. Hiers last Sunday evening. Mr and Mrs Ruff Hiott of this place, spent Ess tar Sunday with the latter's parents, Mr and Mrs James Jordan. Willie Zeigler spent last week’s end with his mother near here. Mrs John Bailey is suffering very much with blood sores on her hand. John Herndon of Charleston, is spending a few days with relatives and friends near here. We are glai to say that D. R. Hiott, w’ho has been very sick, is up again and able to go to his business on the railroad. It seems as if there must be more money in haulding cross ties than in planting cotton by the looks of the ties at the old drV kim. Mrs A H Herndon seems to be somewhat better of her cough and M W Breland lo-t his family cold at this writing . pw- • . We are indeed glad horse, Dixie, this week. LETTER FROM CAPT WAY. Stokes, Apr • F.ditor Press and Standard:—We will have a uruerai work day at Zion on Saturday before the fourth Sun day in this month to clean up *•> the church grounds, preparatory to onr Memorial, which will be held on Saturday, the first day of May. Everbody is invited to come and bring their baskets as well as all the flowers that they can get. Speakers will be on band that will tell ns somethiqg. good. Mast I say, three cheers for the town of Walterboro for their May Festival, though one cannot be surprised at the sucoess of anything that the ladies under* take, without them this world be a blank spot. Glad of tke invitation and especially of the one giren to the old soldiers to take part in the parade. We may not be able to keep step with the music at in days of yore but I cannot tell yon what we might do to the strains of Dixie. We fellows cannot stand too mnch of the sixties stirred np in our memories. 1 would like to say something about our Farmers’ Union but my letter is getting too long already. 1 am a strong advocate of the union, of its object and its aim, for the betterment 'of the farming interest of the county and state. I shall have something to say alenp that line in my next. The people of rhe county were very much saddened by the death of Mr A Wichraau of Wal terboro .
