WEDNESDAY. FEB. 17. 1909.
Here will The Press and Standard
the people's rights maintain,
Unawed by influence and unbribed
by gain.
Of cours«*s YValterboro is going to
have an up-to-date school.
Surely with the great number
educated men and women in this
town, it will be impossible for the
educational facilities to remain what
they are.
Sometimes we feel humiliated and
•h, such sympathy for the children
9
and wife of men we see whose heads
are “blossoming for the grave” and
who go tottering home under tee in
fluence of an intoxicant. Old man,
yours is the shame—Reform!
We rise to congratulate the Wal-
terboro team of fire fighters on the
excellent way they handled the fire
at Grace and Warrens Friday night,
keeping it confined to the buildings
already in flames. Had it not been
for their timely arrival the bam at
the rear of the store and the stores
of Mr McTeer and Mrs Black would
have been destroyed. And in this
connection we desire also to commend
Mr Dandridge for his promptness
and fidelity in starting the pumping
of machinery at the tank and keeping
it going when the excitement and
crowds were all at the scene of the
fire. Such service reminds one of
the firemen and engineer deep dSwn
in the hold of the ship who in times
danger stick to their posts , of duty.
Keep it up, boys, and we shall soon
vote you bronze medals, at least.
Tis splendid to live so grandly
That long after you are gone.
The things you did are remembered.
And recounted under the sun;
To live so bravely ani purely
That a nation stops on its way.
And once a year, with banner and
drum,
Keeps the thoughts of your natal
day.
Walterboro has an honored , past
and a present pregnant with pos
sibilities for a great future. No
future can be great except that
founded on a free and enligh
tened people, and no people can be
enlightened who have no interest in
education. What is Walterboro do
ing for the enlightenment of her
future men ank women—the present
school boy and girl?
We belieVrm civic righteousness
and in parity of life and conduct; we
deplore the excesses committed by
some of our citizens—especially in
Use matter of drinking to intoxica
tion. Such examples .are bad for
ear youth. Can we blame the young
men for going out and making “a
rough house/’ and not visit as severe
condemnation on the old man who
goes tottering home under the in
fluence of liquor?
If the Senate concurs in the
House amendment to appropriate
V* ,000 for the purs base of free
school books to the deserving poor,
that fund will be available for the
purchase of books for poor children.
We trust it will pass, and that its
provisions will be such that there
will be little chance for a misuse of
the funds. This with a compulsory
education law will be a step in the
direction of the development of
many little intellects in this state.
. South Carolina is to be congrat
ulated on the elevation of Judge D.
E. Hydrick to the Supreme Court
bench. A better selection could
hardly have been made. He is
pleasantly remembered here as hav
ing preaided over the Summer term
ef court last year, and there are
tboap who have not forgotten him
and his method of holding court.
He was alike intolerant of the sloth-
fulncas of witneai and juror, and the
dilly-dallying of attorneys. Hold-
lag court for him was burineas.
A bill was passed at the session
of the legislature a year ago provid
ing that the county supe rvisor pur
chase a pair of blood hounds for use
in tracking and 'capturing escaped
prisoners, convicts, or Alleged crim
inals. For some unknown reason
this Act was ignored by the super
visor and no blood hounds purchased.
A week ago four negros prisoners
decided to escape from the county
jail and the efforts to recapture them
have been so far unavailing. Had
there been a pair of blood hounds at
thefjail. it is likely .these negros
would have thought seriously of the
advisability of attempting tc escape,
when it would have been an easy
matter to trail them and recapture
th^m by the use of the dogs.
This Act !• still law and we would
urge the present supervisor, Mr.
Griffin, to make an immediate pur
chase of these dogs.
We understand that a movement
is on foot, and is receiving consid
erable support and encouragement,
to bond the town for $20,000 to erect
a school building. The purpose is,
we are informed, to give the old
building to the negro school, and
remove it to their lot putting it in
good repair, provided the negro free
holders will assist in putting this
bond issue through by signing the
petition etc.
It seems that previous efforts to
carry through petitions for bonding
the town have failed. We hope,
however, that the present movement
will receive the support of everyone.
There is certainly no more worthy
cause than that to which this effort
is directed and it should not fail.
To the end hoped for, we would
urge a united effort on this move
ment, and let us get a school at least
worthy our town. It is time for
Walterboro to get out the class
laughed at wherever progess
named.

THE RIGHT TO CRITICISE,
The right to criticise is one of the
accompaniments of a Republican
from of government. The holders
of public positions are not the mas
ters of the people at large, but are
theis servants- they are supposed so
to be at any rate. So he do it in the
proper manner the humblest citizen
has the right to discuss and to show
his disapprobation of the acts of the
highest officials. Because they dif
fered in opinion with too many of
their subjects, Charles I and Louis
XVJ lost their heads; and because of
such difference political heads fall at
every election. The wise man whose
job depends on the popular vote
never loses sight of his liability to
criticsm; when he does lose sight hs
is no longer wise.
Last week we showed our disap
probation of the methods and acts of
some of the public officials of our
city; whether of cart driver or
mayor, or any position in between
we are not now saying. It seems
that the remarks were not taken in
good spirit, and we may remark,
such remarks seldom are taken in
good spirit by the office holders of
Sumter City. These gentlemen are
not immune: they are not endowed
with any extraordinary amount of
wisdom; they are expecting too much
whey they expect that their event)
act will be greeted by applause, or.
if disapproved, with silence on the
part of those interested. No, the
hundreds who cast the votes have
infinitely more rights than few for
whom the votes are hast, and it is
not only their privilege but their
duty to voice their sentiments. The
Latins believed that the voice of the
people was the voice of the Gods,
