Our school is getting along fine under the careful management of Prof T B Caldwell. We have about forty scholars on roll. Friday afternoon we had a very interesting debate, the subject being: Resolved, that there is more pleasure in summer than in winter. Affirmative, Miss An nie Rickenbaker and Miss Lee Weeks. Negative, Misses Mena Reynolds and Ernestine Hill. The negative side won, although both sides of the debate were very good. The farmers around here are getting ready for another crop. Henry Seigler and Mr L E Hill and two daughters, Ernestine and Mamie attended a marriage in Dorchester County this week. Mrs Nix, of Bamberg is visit ing her dtughter, Mrs Weeks, of this community. Ben Padgett of Mt Carmel came to see bis sister, Mrs D H Seigler, this week. Mr and Mrs B M Jacques are ■pending sometime with the Ut ters parents, Mr and Mrs W F Garris. CARMEL NEWS. Mt Carmel, Feb. 5; Mr. Edi tor:—We are having a few days of very cold, winter weather. John Warren of this section, who is working in Savannah, spent a few days at home this week. Hon U.'V Way, who has been in Columbia attending the legis lature, spent a few days at home this week. Arthur Beach of Savannah, has keen spending sometime at home. There lias been some terrible tires close here, ?nd 1 think that the majority of the people are tired of fighting it. Mr Bearie Ritter spent the day at the home of B N Beach. WHAT A PROHIBITION PRESIDENT COULD DO. If our new president to be in augurated March 4 next were a Prohibitionist he could strike a most eilective blow at the liq uor traffic by appointing the right kind of postmaster general. Such a one could hit the saloon a herculean blow by a few just rulings with respect to the use of the mails for transmitting fraudulent and lying whiskey advertisements, using the gov ernment service to practice fraud upon the public, soliciting whiskey trade in dry territory, prostituting the rural tiee de livery into a drun mer for the liquor traffic and by declining to discriminate against newspapers devoted to reforui or extend their use to fake brewery rural publications without a boua tide subscriber.
