A bar to heaven, a door to bell;
Whoever named it, named it

A bar to manliness and wealth;

A bar to honor, pride and fame.
A door to sin and grief and

A bar to hope, a bar to prayer,

A bar to honored, useful life;
A door to brawling, senseless

A bar to all t hat’s true and brave,
A door to every drunkard’s grave.

A door to tears and aching hearts.
A bar to haven, a door to hell,
Whoever named it, named it

CHARGE TO A JURY.
Tulsa, I T Dec. 12-Judge
liouis Sulzbacher, persidiug in
the Western district of the
United Sta tes court for Indian
Territory, held court last week
at Sapulpa for the first time since
Ins appointment. 11 is chatge Jo
the grand jury is considered as
one of the most rermu kal)!*'docu
ments ever issued from the bench
of the territoiy. The charge is
extraordinary because of his
striking dramatic manner in
which it was delivered and the
great scope of crimes specified in
its text.
Tho court called especial atten
tion tg the increase in crime, and
especially did he show the ter
rors done while persons were
nndet the influence of liquor.
The following is the temperance
lecture delivered in the charge.
“Intemperance is cue of the
most detestable vices cast upon
the human family, and any law
prohibiting the use of intoxicants
should be welcomed and sup-
ported in a communit} of peace
ful citizens to their utmost.
r-
Grimes have been committed by
these excosses, and the annals of
statistics establish the lamenta
ble certainty that the origin of
crime, in most cases was caused
by the turbulence of inebriation.
“Homes were made destitute;
life became unbearable to the
faithful wife and to the devoted
jrother, and children were given
a horrid example. Prison cells
were filled and the gallows exhi
bited its most t-'rrific sp.ctacle.
Carry out and apply tins law to

“He seized a can tilled with
coal oil, saturated the clothes
and the person of the companion
of liis life wiih that combustible
substance, the bodv of the per-
son to whom lie swore before tho
altar of his (Jod to love and to
defend and protect, and in a
munnerthat delicacy causes me
to refraift from depicting, that
monster limited that helpless
human creature.
“Imagine the despair, the
i shrieks of that sutTering woman ;
the giief and the distress of the
powerless babes, who had to
witness that brutality.
“The very fire would have re
lented its terror had not superior
laws of nature controlled its
course. The very flashes, had
they possessed voice would have
implored that monster to extin
guish their fury, but there stood
the wretch enraged and infuriat-
en holding that helpless woman's
frame until the last glimerings
died out, leaving one of God
Almighty’s creatures with its
flesh parched, charred and black.
As black as the heart and soul of
the monster who committed that
diabolical act of cruelty.
“To kill, to torture, one who
received his caresses one who
bore the children to whom he
gave existence is more than mor
tal man can reconcile.
“The woman died after several
days of endurance of anguish and
excruciating pain. Whisky,
drink and intoxication was the
•«le factor of this horrid crime.
Tlicro was no doubt the man was
drunk . Il«* wa fl ably defended,
