ALCOHOL AND THE SOCIAL FABRIC.
That alcohol has an aflinity for
protoplasm, the “physical basis ol
life” itself, and that this is the reason
for the widely varied injuries that it
may ir Hict oft the body, is asserted by
Dr Henry Smith Williams, in a
Bents of articles contributed to Me
Clure’s Magazine (New York). In
♦he first, entitled “Alcohol and the
Individual,” Dr Williams shows
that the tissues of the brain, tin-
nerves, the lu-sirt and bhod-vessels,
the stomach and intestinal tract, the
lymphatic system, the kidneys, and
the liver,may each and all become
diseased by Lhe habitm 1 drinking of
even email «piantities of alcohol. He
notes also that these const<|uences
are not confined to the drinker, but

are paused on to his descendants of
succtssive generations. All this, Dr
Williams tells us, may lie compared
for the moral delinquencies of at least
half of the convicts in our prison^ and
of not lees than four-fifths of the in
mates of our jails and workhouses.

1 would suggest to him, however,
that he make out aud publish in The
Press and Standard each month an

student strive to do his or her best
and would thus be beneficial to the
school. Another thing I would sug
gest is the use of report cards.
Parents have a right to know what
their children are doing, and teach
ers of all schools should make out
iteport cards, whether they are teach
ing town or county schools. I do

(another, and tbil is hot meant for
any iodiyidual. Our money goel out
t6 educate our children, and We
think it nothing but right for every
thing to be done for their advance
ment possible.
Patron* are not doing their full
duty iu all schools. How many
fathers and mothers go to the school
to see what their children are doing,
and to know whether they are com
fortable or not? How many haul
them wood for their stoves? How
many seats and desks in your schoo 1
room? To sit in school with cold
feet will undermine the health of anv

child, md even if there is wood
round that the Tioys can pick up, the
time they take in getting wood should
be put to their books.

Alienists both here and in Europe,
Dr. Williams says, agree that alcohol
is a most potent cause of insanity.
Statistics show also that it is a chief
cause (f crime and of pauperism.
These disastrous effects on the com
munity he sums up thus:,
“At least one-third of all the recog
nised pauperism iu the most highly
civilised communities of Christen
dom results from bodily and mental
inefficiency doe to alcoholic indnl-
jpnee. A similar correspondence
of testimony shows, as we have seen,
that the same cause is responsible for
the mental overthrow of folly one
fourth of nil the hufortnnates who
are sent to asylum for the iosant;
for the ssisfortmms of two fifths of
chikirso; and
from mere sentimental estimates or
pessi fistic guesses. They are induc
tions based on careful surveys of evi
dence. ......
“For every individual that dies
prematurely of a disease directly due
to alcohol, there are scores of individ
uals that suffer to a lesser degree
from maladies which are wholly or in
[mrt of the same origin but which
are not directly fatal.

taken to Dr’s Creek cemetery aud his
funeral was preached by Rev. J. R.
Smith Sa:urday Dec, 12. He leaves
to mourn his loss a wife and one
child, a father and mother, three
brothers, two sisters, and e host of
relatives and friends, we extend the
greatest sympathy to the bereaved
family.
