TRAGEDY IN WALTERBORO.
A sad sight Saturday afternoon
was that of a young man—almost
s boy—being taken to jail by a

tion at the fystem which makes
men drink the stutl and then
punishes them for being the vic
tims of tbo flap set for them by
the county; indignation, too,
that the strongmen—if there be
any—of Walter boro and Colleton
•onnty will sit down and allow
this thing to continue.
Did this bey’s mother sit up
Saturday night and wait for the
return of her “wandering boy?”
In fancy we can see her as she
lies awake, or perhaps paces the
floor, straining every nerv3 to
hear the footsteps of >her boy.
We can see her anguish as the
clock strikes twelve; and, no
footstep. Une, two, three, four,

Now before I leave the good
road’s question I will say that
1 can take the people in this
vincinity that is entitled to pay
the commutation . tax and do
more work with said hands on
the said public highways in
this locality in four hours four
hands per hand than has been
done in two years with all the
tax we have paid, except what

gang. Now 1 don’t mean to
insinuate on any officer, I sup
pose they have done their duty
under the law, so you gentle
men who make the law can see
by this the reason why I am
in lavor of working in place of
being taxed altogether for

Thie is tragedy! In the face
of it loo, while the tragedy is
daily enacted in our midst, men
sit supinely and some even de
fend the accused traffic in
human blood and life for the
sake of revenue.
