Already we have received several letters for Santa Claus and from eertain rumors we have heard there are going to be more of them in the ■ear future* We would ask teachers •ver the county to annouce to their achoola that these letters will be published and get their little pupils to send in their letters. We have a promise from several teachers that they will send in some in a few days. Now we shall possibly depart from •ur original intention of not publish ing these letters till Dec. 'IX, and publish a part of them Dec. Hi. So we would urge those who wish to get their letters to Santa Claus a week ahead of time to send them in at once. Here is what one of the papers says about YOUR STOCKING. 'to “ It almost is Christmas. Wo hardly can wait to hang up the stockings alongside the grate. So hang up the stockings by chimneys with care the night before Christmas; St. Nick will be * there. We are not informed as to the numl>cr of our citizens, hut the Mayor of the town estimates the IMtpulation at 5,500. Supposing ther, that of this numt>er there are 2,500 white people, and that 600 attnd service on Sunday morning, there are possibly 1,900 who do not go to churce on Sunday. With an attendance of 400 in our graded gchool. it would seem that the at tendance at church should average a larger number than 600. While some of our people seem to very anxious about the souls of Mexican Indians, half-bretd.s and Mexicans, it would seem that a good field of labor could be had much nearer home. We have seen more men on our public square on Sunday morn ing than w’e suppose could be found at some of our churches. This absenteeism cannot all be charged up to the callousness of the men who ought to be at service. But these absences should be a mat ter of concern to those of our fellow citizens who preach the gospel from our pulpits. Good and pious hearers have been taught, or else they have imbibed the idea, that they are not their neighbor’s keeper, though they may exhibit unnatural and un- believable interest in their Iwethern in foreign lands. They excuse them selves by saying that their neighbors 1 can go to church, if they want to.' If anybody hereabout has manifest- mrf ed any interest in drawing absentees Yv 0 &F0 into any church, we are not inform- ed of the fact, though a is possible ^ that such instances have occurred. This editor is afraid that some who sit high up in the sanctuary fear that when they are supplied With the graces the supply of religiion will be exhausted, when there would not be enough to go round. There j may be too much indifference about getting attendance, and then when poor people or starngers dare tt> go to church there may be lack of cordiality in the greeting or the welcome.
