We reproduce this week •o * o editorial from the Beaufort Gazette on the subjeet of an Atlantic sea board auto-road. Senator Christen sen, the editor of this paper, is one of the recognized leaders in thought in the State Senate and whenever he advocates a measure it is safe to say it has merit, and the dignified Senators sit up and take notice. It is, therefore, safe to say that his support of this auto-road along the seaboard will mean that it is to receive the attention of thinkers over the State. The News and Courier, comment ing on this road, uses the following language: "That the automobile is the poor man’s chief hope of cheap transportation as well as the rich man’s luxury is already amply de monstrated in many Northern States where the self-propelling vehicles are used for marketing purpoawa by the farmers. Whenever the inhabitants of two communities seriously resolve to have close transportation facilities, w hether they be by steam or electric railways or boats, they are soon pro vided. If the people of Savannah and Charleston can be convinced that the construction of the highway proposed is desirable, it will be pro vided, and it seems evident that the mere statement of the proposition would be all that is necessary to make plain that its carrying out would te of immense mutual benefit. Of course, as the Gazette inti mates, the counties of Colleton and Beaufort wbuld be expected to assist in defraying the expenses of build ing; they could not and would not expect Charleston and Savannah to build good roads for them, and it seems a fair assumption that their taxpayers would gladly co-operate in an undertaking backed by the two cities, and which would promise so much of value to them.” The subject of good roads is just now claiming! more attention than any other single topic in this county, and the construction of auto-roads is simply a corollary—the one in- ccudes the other. Of course this connecting auto-road—or permanent road—is simply enlarging on what we have advocated all along and is a natural outgrowth of a system of permanent and correctly built roads. TWNews and Courier continues: One tires of repeating that good highways promise more for the general prosperity than do any other kind of improvements. We are almost disposed to say that at the present time road building is a sub ject of nearer importance to the South than is school building, for in the last century or two centuries e location has made marked progress, while the roads are little better than they have been since Colonial times. A first rate highway between Savan nah and Charleston would in a few years transform the condition of a wide belt of territory lying between the two cities and it would be dotted with two or three small cities, that are now struggling villages, and ether properous villages would grow up. While drainage iswieceroary to the full development of the coeat country, roed building is the natural step preceding it and its coat ia not Every bod} wonders but yet tu true. These persona tried last week for the murder of Lou. Hmr’i {husband. Dan Hay, and found guilty of murder, with recommendation to mercy. When arrest ed for the crime she admittted that she had given her husband “Rough on Rats”, which had been bought fer the purpoee by Geo. Smith.
