The San Jose Scale In South
The> San Joes (San Hozay)
scale is the most peruicicus in
sect pest of fruit and shade trees

sections the owners of free* are
cutting them down owing to the

repeatedly emphasized the fact

otherwise destroying a tiree

with $an Jose scale nnleae the
tree is so far gone that it has not
enough vitality left to recover
after the scale is killed. Al

cilice to t>e as useful as possible
to the farmer--, truck growers
and ftuit growers all over the
State. We are aware that the
losses occasioned by insect pests
ire enormous every year. In
Older to prevent such* losses it is
necessary for this Division aud
the citizens of thebiate,especial
ly the agricultural workers, to
como as near together, aud work
as closely iu harmony as possible.
In the regular correspondence
with farmers a large number of
letters contain complaints about
serious injuries caused by wire
worms and whit* grubs. These
two problems confront the far
mers every spring and summer.
As there ia no specific that c«n
be recommended against these
pests we must depend on gener
al methods of farm practice . A
good svsiem of farm practice is
infinitely better than all the
sprays and nostrums so ofteu
recommended. While the far 1 !
mer thinks ahead and plans his
course of procedure for the pur
pose r.f nibintaiuing soil fertility
or regaining it when lost, he
rarely asks hirmelf the question,
what course most I pursue to
avoid insect injury to the crop

complain's about injurious in
sects reach ns when the injury is
actually beim: done and w’heu
often no practicable remedy or
preventa'ive can be recommend
