THE HISTORY OF WALTERBORO
We have not published anythig
recently that is receiving or has
received the amount of favorable
comment given the historical sketch
of Walterboro compiled by E T. H.
Shaffer. Mr Shaffer has woven the
history of Walterboro into a very
readable romantic sketch. His style
is never tiresome, and his history
reads like a novel. If ihe facts had
borne him out, it would have added

The Residence of P. M- Murrey
Caught Monday Morning.
Just as the school bell was calling
the children of the town to their
studies Monday morning, the bell of
the Methodist church began ringing
incessantly^ a sure ' sign of fire.
Very soon the town people had very
nearly all left their homes and were
at the scene of the “near” fire,
which was seen to be bursting from
the roof of Mr P M Murray’s resi
dence. The usual delay was exper-
ienced while ladders were hunted
up and brought. Meanwhile those
assembled expecting the house to
bum began carrying out the furni
ture, but—the unexpected happen® 1
more intrepid were on top of the
two-story building and with axes
were making a hole in the roof so
the fire could be gotten to- and
drenching it with water carried up
by the bucket brigade. Soon the
fire was extinguished and the large
crowd assembled dispersed with a
sigh of relief and thanks to Provi
dence that again the town had been
spared a conflagration.

HELP THE BRYAN FUND.
A committee consisting of John H
Peurifoy, M P Howell and W W
Smoak Jr.“has been appointed to
solicit subscriptions for the Bryan
fund in Colleton count). We trust
the response to their appeal for aid
will meet with ready response.
Colleton is very much behind other
counties in this matter- in fact we
do not know; of a single person in
the county who has contributed a
cent up to the time this committee
was appointed. Let them have your
contributions. They are needed.
The election of Bryan and Kern w ill
mean as much to Colleton demscracy
photographs and write-up ready in
time on account of the great rush at
the first of the month. This will
not happen again, for we have ar
ranged with photographer Halford
to take the necessary photographs,
and he will call upon tne merchants
and business men of the town in
ample time. We expect to give a
write-up of every business in town
and would urge, therefore, that the
managers get busy and have their
stuff ready when called for, or bring
it to us. It it no small job we have
undertaken and we shall appreciate
the co-operation of the business men.
It is immaterial to us whose business
we write up first, so whenever you
are ready let us have your photo
graphs etc and we will have the
necessary cuts made, and be pleased
to run the write up as soon as pos
sible. This will mean a great deal
to the business interests of Walter
boro and is the best means of ad
vertising we have ever offered, and
it is free. The only cost attaching
being the photographs and cuts, and
these will belong to you.

ago the old Methodist Minister, Mr
KistJer referred to bhat Church

hill with a little white path leading
to it” that was in his boyhood days,
said it had been many years and the
town being built up he could not
locate the spot, he said” the mem-
bership-of that church was small not

Harriett Pye was one of that num
ber, she lived one mile from the
town on the farm now owned by
Mrs Joseph T Beach. Would like to
know who was the first Methodist
Minister of Walterboro circuit, also
first Presiding Elder of that circuit.
Has any one a copy of the Press and
Standard, with account of the
Cyclone that passed through’Walter-
boro some years ago? if so would be
glad to get the. copy to read and
would return it to the owner and be
much obliged.
