This murder occured in the southern part of Logan county aod-it is up of met Court demanded that something be done, or show cause why, at the next term of Court Just at this time we (County Commissiouers) saw that it was time and absolutely necessary to do something. We bad some money but not enough to complete such an undertaking as this alone. Satisfied of this fact, we took the mat ter up with the Town Councilor Walterboro, which finally resulted in the Town Authorities paying one half the cost of building the well Including all tools and materials of all classes, also one half of the build ing and completion of a steel tower and tank, also one half the necessary machinery for placing the water in this tank. After the above named machinery, tank, tower and well are epapleted the division of expendi- tpra then and thert cease. M. Murray. Walterboro S. C. August 3rd 1908: To the Democratic Voters of Colleton County: I am in the race for Clerk of the Court to win . ISome of my people have asked me why I tjuit the Auditor’s office. 1 will explain. 1. Immediately after the last primary election 1 told a number of my friends that 1 would not run for Auditor again. The last legislature raised the Auditor’s salary, but my word was out that 1 would not be a candidate, and so I am not. 2. The salary of the Clerk is much larger and I expect to charge for recording papers, etc. every cent the law allows. 1 think, having served my people faithfully for so many years, this promotion is deserved. So much for ray reasons for was asking the people to elect me Clerk. Now what can 1 promise (hi people in return, if elected? In answering this question 1 call attention to what is known as the Fee Bill passed by the Legis lature some twenty years ago and now on oar Statute book. This Fee Bill allows the Clerk of tho Court for Colleton County to charge for recording deeds ton cents per hundred words, and no more. So an ordinary title, without dower, should be record ed for 85 or 50 cents, and with dower for 50 to 60 cents. Mort gages of real estate should be charged for at the same rate. Now 1 promise my people to follow strictly this fee bill. 1 Further promise to make you as good Clerk as you have eyer had. I will give my whole time to the office and will serve my people day and night as only a conscientiousservantof the peo ple can. I make no charges against the incumbent, except to say that he has had his turn and now mine has come. Yours truly P. M. Murray the election can not be held. The sentiment of those present is contained in the following resolutions, which were unani mously adopted: \Y HEUF.AS, Attorney General has refused to give an opinion as to the regularity of the proposed election as to the sale of liquor in Colleton county and WHEREAS, the Attorneys for the County Board of itegie- tration have advised that the election can not be held owing to a serious conllict in the two Acts of the Legislature, aud there being considerable doubt in our minds, under these circum stances, as to the proprity of our attempting to hold the efactiou at this time, therefore, be it resolved: 1. That in our opinion it would be unwise to make further effort, at this time to hold the election August 25th, although we regsef, exceedingly, our inability to hold this election. 2. That this Association shall continue its work in advocating State wide prohibition, and es pecially in its efforts to prohibit tho sale of alcholic liquors m Colleton County. 8. That the Township Chair men and their assistants be urged to continue their work of organi zation until every township ie thoroughly organized. 1. licit we call upon all min isters of the Gospel, and all Christian workers in all tho churches and Sunday school** of the County to continue their eff orts against this great evil. 5 That we call upon the voters of Colleton County to support only such men for any oJice. from magistrate to gover- iio., as are truly ami sincerely in sympathy and accord with our movement. Crosby was drinking and became involved in a person al difficulty with Lane, making an effort to strike him with knocks Lane grabbed a wagons •haft and etrock Crosby first mt he arm and then on the head,. breaking one of the bones in hie- ana and making a in his head.
