Picnic At Cottageville.
The picnic given last Friday by the
Woodmen of the World at Cottage
ville, a dinner was spread and the
occaesion thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The local camp is in a very flour
ishing condition and an effort is be
ing made to spread its influence in
the community—hence this picnic.
Appropriate and able addresses
were made bn this occassion by Prof.
Hugo Sheridan, of Bamberg, and
Capt. E.L. Fishburne, of Walter
boro. In the afternoon an attempt
was made to play oaae ball, which
resulted, after two and one-half
innings, in a score of 16 for Cot
tageville and Zero for Providence.
Ite Providence team became offend
ed at a ruling of thp umpire and at
this stage broke loose from th

One of the largest picnics held in
a long time in this county, and one
of the most enjoyable, was that held
Friday at Bethel. That is an ideal
place for holding a picnic. Large
stately o:tk«, and walks, and a large
church tor the singing and speak
ing. with a good well of water to
que*jch the thirst on a hot picnic
day, and Friday was a hot picnic day
all right. And then the people!
This community is noted for the
hospitality of its people. They are
all good livers, and if there iaany
one in want in that whole section it
was not evidenced in the dinner
prepared. The - fifteen hundred
people present could have been fed
several times with the dinner that
was spread on the long tables. No
one went a a ay hungry unless they
so desired, lor the invitation was
g< neral and genuine. Nothing hap
pened to mar the enjoyment of the
day. If there were any spirits present
they must have been the spirits of
the sainted dead that sleep in the
cemetery hat'd by the church, a
cemetery where lie buried the loved
of many years.
This was a Sunday school picnic.
Rev. T. 1'. Burgess is the pastor in
charge of the circuit of which Bethel
is a part, and holds services here
twice a month. He told your cor
respondent that he has :150 members
at this church and that the average
attendance is about 300 at the regu
lar services. There are few churches
in the county that can beat this
recovd, we are sure. The Sunday
school is keeping up with the church.
Its superintendent J. D. Hudson,
has been continuously superinten
dent for twenty-seven yeras! If
there is such another record in the
county we know not of if Mr Hud
son is not entirely alone in this good
work and long record. Laboring
along with hin>,are Messrs. H. C.
Breland, E. H. Ulmer ("Uncle
Nick", J. S. Crosby, D. B. Breland
and others who have not been in
service so long, hut who are none
the less faithful, conscrated workers,
such as Miss Cora Burgess, Travis
Givens, Willie Bryan and others.
Miss Minnie Broan is the organist,
while "Uncle Nick” leads in the
singing.
The speakers were happily intro
duced by Rev. Burgess, and made
appropriate addresses. "A Succes-
ful Sunday School Teacher" Was
the subject of a carefully prepared
paper by Travis Givens. He was
followed by Dr. H. W. Black of
Walterboro, who with his jokes kept
the audience in a good humor and
incidentally drove home some good
points. Prof. Hugo S. Strickland
followed in an address in which
he emphasized the importance of
earnest prayer in the preparation
and teaching of Sunday school lea-
sons. M. P. Howell, Esq, followed
in an able and eloquent address.
He cited some of the things that pre
vent the development of true man
hood and womanhood, paying a pret
ty tribute to ..oman. Men should
be honest, industrious and generous
and the lack of these virtues unmake
manhood. The last speaker was
W‘ W. Smonk, Jr., who spoke on
Prohibition. He showed why men
and women should join hftnds in try
ing to drive out the curse of strong
drink. On account of the lateness
and heat, Mr Smoak c^t nia remarks
short. The benediction was pro
nounced and the audience repaired
to the school house where iced
lemonade was dispensed, after which
dinner was served. The crowd then
soon began to disperse, with the
verdict that the day was a perfect
success. Visitor.
