THE HOUSE THAT GIVES :Y0U SATISFACTION: OR YODR HONEY BACK
CANDIDATES IN
DORCHESTER.
Chief Contests are for State
Senate, Sheriff and
Supervisor.
St George, July 17.—The
political situation in Dorches
ter county up to this time has
been devoid of any sensational
or bitter feeling- The county
campaign will begin at Sum
merville on the 25th inst, and
by that time it will be definitely
knoWn who all of the aspirants
for political positions are.
This meeting will, it is under
stood. be a large one, for the
reason that it will be artended
by the voters from Knights-
ville, Delemars, and that
section of the county lying
east of Cypress Swamp. Up
to this time there have , been
no definite issues raised for
the campaigners. The candi
dates who have announced so
far in the local papers are well
known and prominent citizens
of this county, and the voters
are going to have no difficulty
whatsoever in selecting those
who will give them an honest
administration of public affairs.
It is quite evident that the
people of Dorchester county
are not disposed to displace
some of the present officials;
they having given them a most
satisfactory administra ion ol
the affairs of their respective
offices.
P C Johnston, Jr, who has
been clerk of court since the
organization of the county,
will not stand lor re-election,
but his father, Prof P C Johns
ton, Sr, who has been acting
as his deputy, has announced
his candidacy for the position.
Judge ofProbate T R Tighe,
who has held the office of
Probate Judge virtually since
the creation of the county, has
also arnounced his candidacy
for re-election. It is safe to
predict that by reason of the
fact that these two officers
have given general satisfaction
to the people of Dorchester
county and to the local and
visiting members of the . Bar,
that they will be elected with
out opposition. 1 he chief
contests in the county will be
for the office ot Senator,
sheriff and supervisor, and the
friends and adherents of the
candidates for these positions
are active and enthusiastic for
their special favorites. Sena
tor John D Bivens, the present
incumbent, will be opposed by
Mr St Clair Muckenfuss, of
Ridgeville, and Mr E J Lime-
house, of Summerville. Mr j
M M Limehouse, the present
sherift, is opposed by Mr
Amos Owens, of Ridgeville,
Mr L W Westbury, of orover,
and Mr W B Traxler, of St
George. The supervisor. Mr
H H Gross, the present incum
bent, will have as his oppon
ents Mr J H Knight, of
Knightsville, and W illiam L
Johnston, of Grover. Mr T H
Abbott, Jr, who succeeded at
the last election Mr P S
Moorer, who held that position
for many years, has no opposi
tion so far, and neither has
County superintendent of
education Mr John J Howell,
the people being unquestiona
bly satisfied with the manner
to which they have conducted
their respective offices.
The Hon J S Wimberly,
j*be MWJWpreseats the people «anUt. m
of this county in the Legisla
ture, has been announced, by
his friends for re-election, and
up to this time no one has
come out to measure political
swords with him.
County Treasurer J M
Whetsell, who has held this
position for many years, has
bee brought out again by his
friends throughout the county,
and Mr Thomas J Appleby, of
the Reevesville section, an ex
auditor of Colleton and Dorch
ester counties, will also contest
lor this positiorw-. There are
numerous candidates for the
county commissioner. Among
them being D M Tuttle and J
D Wimberly, who now holds
this office, and J VV Bell, J D
Murray and W E Griffin. For
coroner, P L Rrzer, present
incumbent, L R Cummings and
James W Harleson. At St
