The Whiskey Issue-
We desire ajjain to say to
those people who think the
whisky issue is dead in this
County, that they are mistaicen.
York county i-; now nominal
ly prohibition. So lar as the
letter of the law is concerned,
it is total prohibition. It
would be absurd to deny that
liquor is not being sold illegal
ly in considerable quantity
But still there is not nearly so
much liquor being sold or con
sumed as in dispensary days.
There are those, however,
who are looking forward to
wide open conditions again,
and unless the situation is
carefully watched they will
realize what they are after.
, The observation of those
who have watched the fight on
the liquor question in this
County since the first establish
ment of prohibition in 1880, is
that the liquor people are al
ways busy, no less when the
sale of liquor is permitted by
Irfw than when it is prohibited.
Those opposed to the liquor,
begin to show interest only
alter the legal sale has been
re-established for a long
enough time to begin to show
its degrading effects on the
population.
There has been a three-year
period of prohibition now and
while every reasonable man
will admit thit conditions have
improved, immeasurably, so
lar as decency and sobriety
are concerned, still it is a fact
that there are hundreds who
would restore the old status.
The campaign of two years
ago was waged almost solely
upon the issue of destroying
the old dispensary. The
county dispensary idea was
does in encouraging the con-
sumption of whisky, and
thereby breeding poverty and
crime, the county dispensary
also serves as a basis for
political organization, and
already some of the counties
are being controlled through
their dispensaries.
So far as we have informa
tion, there is no well defined
movement in York county in
favor of the establishment of a
county dispensary; but there
is a very considerable senti
ment that would look with
favor on the establishment of
such an institution, and the
people who are opposed to
anything of the kind will con
tinue on their guard.—York

Children’s Day Exercise*
Tabernacle.
Smoaks, July 9th—Editor
Press Staudard:—your correspon-
dmt wrote au article describing
a very deliahtfoul day spenc at
Tabernacle church, Sunday June
28th, and not seeing it in either
your issue of July Ist or 8th. we
have decided to send you another
brief account of this occasion.
Children’s day exercises at
Tabernacle are always enjoyable
and this year they were especial
ly so. Superintendent B. L.
Jones and his able assistants
spared no pains to make this an
enjoyable day. Tl ey had ar-
yas a substitute that seemed for the child-
to promise more
local control. It was r:cog
nized by those who advi cited
the change to county dispen
saries that they also would be
as corrupt in proportion as
was the state dispensary; but
it was believed that they would
be eaiser to control.
As a matter of fact, much
corruption has already devel
oped in connection with the
county dispensaries. In some
instances adeguate punishment
has been inhicted on those
who were shown to be guilty.
In most other instances, th„
presumption has become very
great; but the facts are not
evident enough to compel ac
tion. Tnere is no reasonable
doubt of the fact that countv
dispensaries will do as much
harm as state dispensaries.
As a rule, the people who
stood for the state dispensary
as against the county dispen
saries, have now, since the
destruction of the state dispen
sary, become friends and advo
cates of the county dispensary
and the idea of a county dis
pensary has its friends in York
County.
Among the arguments used
by those who favor the estab-
lishipent of a county dispen
sary is that it would help the
public revenuesi It is claimed
that the liquor profits would
assist materially in the im
provement of streets and the
building of roads. Experience
of generations has proved that
there was never a more
expensive way of raising
ftwttie: bur^still there are
many people to whom the idea

The children had beejn well
trained and au
pieces with ease. A well trained
choir, under the direction of Mr.
Jones, furnished music for the
occasion.
The speakers who addressed
the large congregation present
were Dr. H. W. Black, H. D.
Padgett and W. W. Smoak,Jr.,
of Walt* rho.o, and lion. C. W.
Garris of Denmark. These
sptuker* h^i b jen invited and
had come predated with fine ad
dresses. Dr. Black spoke on
educatiou and prohibition, Mr.
Padgett and Mr Smoak made
prohibition speeches, and Mr.
Garria spoke on the importnace
of Sunday school education.
These speeches were well re
ceived.
Every one went away feeling
that they hai been repaid for
attending the exerciaea and
congratulating the people of
Tabernacle ou sucu evidences of
a splendid Sunday school at this
place. Scribo.
