There are indeed, many conditions
in Walterboro and Colleton county
that need to be bettered. This is a
big county, the largest in South Car
olina, and in point ol aoil, posi bill ties
and as a future field lor develop
ment, the greatest. Any agency,
therefore, haying for its purpose the
development of such a county is
always welcomed by The Press and
Standard.
The sentiment against the uae of
strong drink at public functions is
growing stronger. The Knights of
Pythias in all its organisations is
unequivocally opposed to the use of
liquors at any of its functions. Not
long ago we were present at a D. O.
K. K. ceremonial meeting when an
applicant who was under the
influence of whkkey was-< politely
told he could not bo initiated. The
Maimos are opposed to its use, but
not so emphatically. Yet the prohi
bition sentiment among them is
growing, and we trust the Shriners
will soon be able to meet ia social
pleasures without the use of strong
drink. We were net present at the
last ceremonial meeting of the
Shriners at Asheville, but are in
formed that there was little drink
ing. We regret that our State Press
Association cannot meet without
having a whiskey supply on hand.
May the time soon come when the
drinking of whiskey will be under
tim ban in all these social gatherings.
