The^oldest son of Bet William Weekley and hif wife Mary JD Mathis died at hia home near Early Branch, Hampton oonnty. Monday after- noon jJnne 29,1908. Tneaday after noon he was buried with Masonic honors at Great Salkehatchie church, Barnwell ooanty. Last August Mr Weekley bad a stroke of paralysis which left him almost helpless. Medical skill and loving attention failed to restore him to health. Friday before hia death he suddenly grew worm. The end oame quietly and quickly. Mr Weekky, the eldest of children, was in the 77th year of hie age. He is snrvived by two sisters, lire Joyce Brant Ulmers, 8 C aad Mrs 8ue J. Editor Press and Standard:—With j the continued rains and the fast growing grass. 1 haven’t had the j chance to write but little of late. Crops in this and adjoining communi- lies are very poor. I don’t think it possible for more than a fifty per cent crop to be made with good seasons the rest of the season. Mr. Editor I received an invitation from the Daughters of the Confed racy at St. George on the third of this present month, in celebration of Jefferson Davis birthday. I feel very much complimented by getting the invitation, but by a missent letter I could not go. I would say right here, what is the matter with the ladies of Colleton County? Is there not as much patriotism in this County as others? I believe that Col leton furnished some as good and true sons to the Confederacy as ever wore the gray. Then why not their deeds and heroism be perpetra ted here as well as elsewhere? What say you. ladies of Colleton? I fear that the true character of Mr. Davis will never be known to the South as a statesman. To be sure, very few of our histories treat him with any fairnem, hence our young people are more inclined to condemn than to commend. But I am still in hopes that some historian will some day give him justice. Mr. Davis waa a great man, that no man will deny. As President he made some mistakes; someone has said that he would have made a better general than a president and that R- E. Lee would have made a better president than a genre!. Taking the two, each man had his proper place. We know that the two men, beginning with out anything, for four yea • waged oneof the bloodiest wars that waa ever fought. As to their military genius, they were the wonder and had the admiration of the whole civilised world. From a southern standpoint, I ■ay pH honor to Davis, the Leer, Johnsions, Stewart, Forrister, Jackson and our own beloved Hampton, and for all who wore the gray, for their love and devotion for what they believed to be right. Our Commander, Gen. Steven V. Lee, the last of the Confederate Leiutenant Generate, has passed over the river, and it wont be long before we shall all cross over, and trust that we shall rest under the shade of the Tree. G. W. Henry Trowell, of Tamps Fla, spent the fourth of July with his parents near Walterboro. A. F. Neyle of Hagood in Sum- iter county, is visiting relatives in town. Mr. and Mrs. «F. T. McGregor are enjoying their handsome new automobile. Mrs. B. Levy and nephew Paschal Felder, who have been visiting relatives, in Bamberg and Orangeburg, returned yester day. There will be a basket picnic at Rice Patch Julv the 30th, The occasion is children’s day. Everyone is invited to attend and bring a fall basket. Mrs J. W. Hammond and ehild? ren of Augusta, arrived in town Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Hammond are residing in the handsome new cottage at the foot of Main street. Mr Hammond is editor of the Cot- leton News. Mrs R. Boyd Cole of Barnwell is spending a few weeks at Mn» Wil liam’s. Mr. Cole is editor of the Barnwell Sentinel; Mrs Cole was Mias Zadie Sims grand-daughter of the Hon. W. Gilmore Sima. A Sad Death On the night of June 22nd the Death Angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. M Jaques and claimed for his victim their little babe, Annie Evelyn Jaques. All was done for her that medical skill and loving hands conld do, but of no avail, until the end came, when she calmly entered home to be a Jewel with those around the throne of God. Little Annie, though only eleven months old, was a bright and loving little babe. She was loved by all who knew her and cherished by a mother’s care, but God, in his love, saw fit to bear her away from this world of sorrow to yonder shining shore. The funeral services were conduct ed by Rev. L. B. Ackerman in the presence of friends and relatives. May the Lord bless the heart broken father and mother in this their sad hour of sorrow, and may God help them to meet her around the shining throne of God in heaven.
