Newspaper Ails Lead AU.
By an overwhelming vote the
v&^oe of newepaper advertising
above all other forms of advertis
ing as a means of attractiLg per-
son\ to theaters, was demonstrate i
ed recently in Hurtig A: Seauion’s
Music Hall, New York, where j
the 1‘aul McAlister stock com
pany was playing. C 1* Creen-
eker, manager of the stock com
pany, had decided to find out
the relative value of newspaper,
advertising, billboards, wagons,
sandwich men and postal cards.
He placarded all the deuces in
Harlem with billboards telling
of bis show, employed ten sand-,
wich m*u to walk about the
atreete, sent out . 15,000 postal
cards to Harlem resideuts and
distributed 25,000 haudbilis. For 1
a week slips of {paper were passed I
to the auditors, on which ^they 1
were asked to designate what
had attracted them to the play
house. The printed requests!
were:
‘‘What attracted your atten-'
tion to the fact that Mr McAllis
ter it appearing in Hurtig a
Searaou's?
“Did you read it in a newspa
per? Did you see it on a bill
board? Did yon see it on moving
wagon or a man carrying a sign/i
Was it by means of a postal card?
Was it by hearsay? If not by
auy of these means, please state
what induced you to comp.”
Frantically every one who
received a slip of paper told
what had attracted him or her'to
the playhouse, and a coant of
the slips showed that more than
75 per cent of the audience had
been attracted by the newspaper
advertisements.
“This shows conclusively.”
Oreneker said, “that wo make
no mistake in giving the bulk of
our appropriation lor advertis
ing loathe newspapers.”—Ameri
can Frees.
