ON THE WAY '
TO THE BLOCK.
[Origin*].]
One day aoine two and a half een-
tnrlea aiso the Lady AralxHla Itoylo,
borne tn lier “chair” hy a otnple of
oienlals on th«- 8tnrnd In London, was
•topped at Temple Bar, the way being
narrow, by a small party on foot. The
lady put her head out of the chair wiu-
4k>w to learn the came* of the delav
c / *
Bbe saw a prisoner in charge of guards.
A sudden thought struck the Lady
Arabella.
“Whither are you going?" she a ,; ke.l
Of the otficer of the guard.

“What to do?”
ik. “To cut ofT this man's head.”
“And supposing it i K*ases me to mar-
17 him?”
“Ton'll have a husband without a
head."
♦.'iHVnt'H Just the kind of husband I
want, and none other.”
• Bbe bade her lackeys set down the
ffrfily and sei^t one of them to fetch a
clergyman. In a few minutes ho re
turned with one, and, the nrisoner con-
'•enting, the knot was tied. Then the
procession moved on to Tyburn, and
the Lady Arabella proceeded on her
way much pleased with the adventure
Though but twenty-two years old, she
was heels over head in debt, and at
that time there was a law in England
that when a woman married she was
absolved from all she owed. In the
course of half an hour she would l>e
a widow, having got rid of both hus
band and debt.
But fate decreed that the delay of
the marriage should save the prison
er's life. When lie was kneeling l>e-
fore the block at Tyburn and the ex
CCUtloner was uliout to raise ids ax a
horseman was seen coming like the
wind holding aloft a paper. The ax
was stayed till the messenger arrived,
and the paper proved to Is- an order
to sus[iend the execution and commit
the prisoner to the Tower.
A week Inter Ixmrion was In ecstasy
over the return of King Charles II.,
and all jiersons Imprisoned on account
of loyalty to him were releases!. Alex
ander Yeoman, the son of a country
aqulre, walked out of the Tower with
no yoke u|K»n his'shoulders except the
yoke of matrimony, which lie had no
desire to throw olT. The vision of
beauty' that had come down from
heaven. It seemed, while lie was on
the way to Tyburn was not forgotten
by him. For (loliticnl reasons his re
prieve was not published, ills wife
Immediately after her wedding and
supposed \vido\vhiK»d sought solace In
Paris, where she proceeded to plunge
again into debt in the gayeties of the
Fn neli capital. She returned some
time after the accession of the new
king and entirely Ignorant of the fact
that slu* was a married woman.
One evening at a ball at the palace
the king sought her and said: "I de-
elre to present to you one of my gen
tlemen in waiting He is more to yon
than any other man. for he has given
you absolution, though you have given
him life. Ciin you guess who he is?"
“Absolution i n! re ■■ only from heaven,
your majesty, and if I have given him
life I must !»e iii* ne ther.”
The king I tngle 1 and directed Alex
ander Yeoman w> he brought to him.
When lie arrived he >: d before the
beautiful ArnWdla a young man
•carreiy older than herself.
“If tids 1> my sou." site said to the
king, "I must have i uue him In my
babyhood."
“You have met !«efore.“ said lin
king. "1*0 you not reniemlier his
face?”
Tile lady looked at Yeoiitifn curious
ly. "No.” she said at last. "1
reniemlier ever to have seen him. I*e
fore.”
“That may be la-cause when we met
I had suffered from a long distemper."
raid Yeoman, “and was sore dis
tressed."
“And what distressed you?”
“Faith,” said the king, "he was near
ing corruption.”
.“Your majesty Is siiertking In rid
dles.” said Arabella.
“Rather pat It.” said Yeoman, "that
1 was granted a glimpse of heaven
before l was to become food for
worms.”
“A truce to this talk." said the lady,
"fcnd tell me where we have met.”
“Never mind that.” said the king, "at
toast for the present. The gentleman,
having been n stanch supporter of his
rightful klug. deserves his reward.
Alexander Yeoman, kneel! Now arise,
■tr Alexander Yeoman.” and the king,
drawing bis sword, rested It on the
young man's shoulder. “1 have an es
tate for you In Surrey,” be continued,
“taken from a notorious Round bead, an
valued at £200.000. I would pro*
you with a wife, hot the Lady
Arabella has /forestalled mo in that
Lady Arabella Yeoman, this la your
husband, whom you married on his
way to Tyburn, condemned to be exe
cuted for fidelity to his king. He was
reprieved and at our restoration to the
throne set free.”
Lady Arabella was not long in re
covering from her astonishment. “Was
ever such lack!” she exclaimed. ”1
naet a man about to loee his head who
Hfta me out of debt I meet him again
with that head on his shoulders, and
he brings me a fortune.”
The marriage turned out to be a very
happy one. The wife became a do
mestic woman, though she and her
husband were high in favor at court
