The entry of Mayor Rbett into tht*
race for the U. S. Senate came as a
surprise to everyone, but not more so
than that of Jno I’ Grace. We huve
puzzled over this matter no little and
can hardly understand the why’s and
wherefore’s. Mr Grace is an ambi
tious young lawyer in Charleston
and, it seems, has incurred the dis
pleassure of the “Broad Street Gang”
in some way. Consequently they
nevei mu-e an opportunity to do all
in their power to keep him down.

gates to the Denver convention.
Mayor Rbett was a member of the
Charleston delegation and fought Mr
Grace’s election as a delegate to

Charleston delegation, and was
frowned down by the other delegates.
Now as soon as Mr Rbett an
nounces his candidacy, Mr Grace
comes out against him. We are of
the opinion that he was induced U
come out against Mr Rhett to “get
even.” Two wrongs cannot make a
right, and we doubt very senously'if
either of these candidates has the
entire consent of his conscience on
these two points. Deliver us from
such unstatesmanlike politics.
