green marsh on every side, ve
gaze on the white-crested waves,
on the many steamers, launch
boats and swift-sailing fishing
craft that come so near the bluff,
that we hear their Isogh of en
joyment at a well-filled boat of
oysters making for theeaooery
just above ns that is giving em
ployment to many poor people on
the island.
The point of view is lovely at
all boors on.ihis isle, bnt especi
ally in the morning at sun rise,
when the great round orb of day
seems to rise f.om the water, and
its reflection, seen so bright and
glorious like a stream of melted
gold, make one long for the soul
of an artist to depict its glory on
canvas. A surprising fact is that
all vegetation here is frost-proof
—great acres of white cabbage,
onions, beets, and a strange look
ing vegetable, half cabbage and
half turnip. Cabbage plats by
millions are seen all over the
island. And as one sits shiver
ing fram bleak winds, the planta
tion is green as in raid-summer
with ns in upper Carolina and
violets, narcissus and spring
flowers are in bloom. 1 am told
the heavy fogs prevent injury
from frost.
The islanders raise hundreds of
hogs, corn, potatoes, peas, ground
nnts, fruit and berries, while oys
ters are plenteous and cheap, and
boats axe constantly on the river
to sepply families with flsh and
oysters.

present time the office forces are
working nntil midnight to fill
orders from distant points. JThe
life is an ideal one for those who
desire to avoid politics and all
its ways that are dark and tricks
that are mean. We get the
News and Conner, of course, bnt
not one seems to know thaVthe
Colombia State still lives. We
sent to Charleston for it, hat
failed to get a copy; so we wrote
to a young friend at Colombia to
supply os. The “Old Lady on
Broad Street” has the love and
confidence of her iflhd subjects,
and they own no other sovereign,
Annooncement is made that
the world-famous and most bean
tifol gardens at Magnolia-on-the
•Ashley, will be opened next
Monday, and a visit to these
gardens is one of the featnree of
a tourist trip ad a stop-over in
the City by the Sea. For in
formation to many who have
never visited this grand old place,
we will mention that the fare
from the Isle of Palms, including
admission to the grounds is 11.60.
