MR SMITH’S EXPLANATION.
In this issue will be found an
article by Representative I) L Smith
as to why Senator Griffin’s bill re
quiring an investigation of tbe
county’s finamis failed to pass at
tbe recent setsion of the Legislature.
In this article Mr Smith goes into
an explanation as to his record as
county tret mrer. We have nothing
to do with this; in fact, nothing ws
have written in this connection has
reference to Mr Smith as tieasurer,
and Mr Smith does us an injustice
when he states that “the obvious
purpose and intent of these, and
other similar statements which have
recently reached our ears, is to create
tbe 'impression in the minds of the
paqple.that I, m * member of tbe
House of Representatives, am guilty
of using tbe power reposed ia me by
virfae'of -this honorable cltoe to
prevent aa exposure of myself
oouaiy treasurer”
The position w« have taken all
alopg ia this: The Grand Jury of
Gotlatoa county, ia one of their
recent preaentmecta, sew fit to call
upon our delegation |UL the General
Assembly to pom aa act requiring aa
expert axaauaatisa of tbe oflkea of
Colleton eounty for a period of ten
yean put This raooaumoidatioa by
tba Grand Jury we believe,
mowded by many, if not a majority,
ol tbe citisene of tbo county. For
•ome reason, tbe Legialatare foiled,
at ita recent session, to provide for
thia expert examination, thereby
ignoring tbe presentment of the
Grand Jury and the withes of the
people. We believed it eminently
proper that some explanation be
made aa to thia foilure.
This explanation oould have been
made with equal propriety by any
member of tbe Legislature. Senator
Griffin made an explanation in onr
issue of two weeks ago, in which he
put it pu to the membera ot the
Ileus* of Representatives to make
some explanation. We expected some
explanation from some member of the
House of Representatives in last
week’s issue, but as none appeared,
we£felt it proper and our duty to al
lued to its absence.
Now that both sides have spoken,
we are of the opinion that the pub
lie is in a position to judge Intel-
legeutly.
So far aa Mr Smith’s record as
county treasurer is concerned, ws do
not believe that any one thinks for a
moment that he has been guilty of
any intentional wrong. He unfor
tunately for himaelf, was imposed
upon on account of his desire to
and strictly prohibits

has been made illegal in Washington and the District of Colum
