We will however,* have an
Election in Colleton and Aiken
counties on the first Wednesday
in April if tho Senate will allow
oar House Bill to pass. Every
one 1 meet in Colleton wishes to
know what is the proposed
amendment to the road law, and
with yoor permission I will give
it here. It provides for “An
annnal commotation tax of one
dollar per bead, which (hall be ax
pended upon the pnhlie highways
of the county, and in the town
ship from which it is collected;
that the Count/ Auditor be re-
qnired to take returns of the
tame, and the County Treasures
shall collect at same time and in
same manner as other taxes are
collected. There shall also be
made a levy of two mills onjthe
dollar on all taxable property in
Colleton County to supplement
tbe commotation t&x for work
on the public roads.
Sxc. 2. It shall be the duty of
the County Supervisor, upvn the
recommendation of the several
Township, Boards of Assessors,
to appoint one Overseer in each
township, whose doty it shall be
to employ a force of not lees
than ten able-bodied men to
work on the pnblic road, for
which service the said Overseer
shall receive two dollars per day
and tbe laborers one dollar per
day: Provided, that the Over
seer shall have the right, when
ever it becomes necessary, to
appoint a second Overseer, for
bis township, who shall do the
work and prbvide, for the pay of
his men in the manner hereafter
provided. The Overseer shall
at the end of each week, give to
each hand iff his employ a claim,
against the county,» properly
signed by himself, for the whole
amount due each hand, bat in
no case shall the Overseer draw
money for his hands. The Sap-
ervisor shall have the right st
all times to borrow money for
necessary work on the roads and
pledge the next collection of
this tax for the same.
Sxc. 8. Any failure to pay
said road tax shall be a misde
meanor and on conviction shall
bs punished by fine, not less
than five dollars nor more than
fifty dollars, or by imprisonment
of not less than ten days nor
more than thirty days.
Sxc.* 4. All Aets in consistent
with this Act are hereby repeal
ed.
Sxc. 6. That this Act shall go
into effect immeadlately upon its
approval.
This may be farther amended
or it may sot pass at all hot by
comparison you will see that this
proposes a remedy for every
week point in tbe original act.
