Shark Worship In Hawaii.
The shark has boon |>orbaps the
poet universally worshiped of all the
Hawaiian animal gods. Strange as It
may seem, the Islanders formerly re
garded the shark ns being the friend
and protector of all thoee who pay him
devout attention. Each locality along
the coaat of the main Inlands of the
Hawaiian group formerly had Its pa
tron shark, whose name, place of
abode, history, etc., were all well
known to bis superstitious wofshlpers.
The biggest and moat celebrated of
those shark divinities was a male,
-who** mouth was so. large that be
could easily swallow any other shark
known to frequent those waters. Ac
cording to the Hawaiian folklore sto
ries, the bulk of this “gef of the sea”
was so great that he could not pass
through the narrowest channels which
•eparnte the different islands, bat
spent his time swimming tround the
» whole group and looking after the wel
fare of tbo people.
