Roads are now kept free from dust
la southern California by the applica
tion of oil.
It baa been found that to place roads
In condition through the use of oil Is
cheaper than maintaining them In half
condition during a single season by
sprinkling with water. And when a
road has once been put Into condition
A*Mh oil It requires but slight addition
al expenditure to keep It so.
On© hundred barrels of oil per mill*-
spread over an area eighteen feet in
width will pdt a road in condition
along the extent of the oiled surface
and give an excellent roadway, ade
quate for ordinary traffle. The oil is
put on In three applications—the first
at th© rate of sixty barrels per mile
and th© two subsequent treatments at
th© rate of twenty barrels per mile,
•aob.
Great care must be taken in deliver
ing the oil. It should be hot when dis
charged and poured upon a hot sur
face, so that the work of the >011 sprin-
klliuMa confined to the heat of the day.
Th* oil cannot be poured on Indiscrim
inately! bat must be drilled into the
dost as wheat Is drilled Into land pre
pared to receive it. If It Is not so ap
plied. the oil will not saturate evenly
tha dust area, but will lie In splotches,
ytin together and so make a very Im
perfect surface.
In orde# to meet the requirements a
machine has been devised. A big tank
mounted-on four wheels drags a sort
of tender box. supported by two
wheels. Into which Is run from the tank
n supply of oil. This box has a furnace
beneath It. which heats the oil, and at
tached to It la a drag looking some
thing like a hayrake.
A number of curved rods or fingers
go out from the Iwttom. and these are
drawn through the dust and along the
road. They mark little furrows In the

The Confederate Veterans of
Verdier Township ossemhled at the

a township representative; with
view to the constitution of the
County Board of Pensions, and were
presided over by one of the oldest
veterans bf the county, Mr Solomon

after he had expressed a desire to
retire, and accepted the same in
