Gadsden is an up-to-date city sup
plied with sewerage, electric lights,
water works, cable can, and five
rail-roads enter it in addition to a
line of steamers. Real estate is
high, A lot on Broad St 22 feet
front, sold Tuesday of this week for
three thousands dollars. A cottage
and small lot just opposite to where
l am residing sold sixty days ago
for five thousand dollan and is to
day being offered for ten thousand
This property in Walterboro could
not be sold for over one thousand
dollars.
This place is sadly in need of la
borers of all kinds. • Common every
day laborers get $1.50 and skilled
workmen from two to four per day,
and no trouble to get employment
anywhere. I would advise our
vuong men who want work, and pay
for it, and who are willing to spend
their* energy on work, and not
cigarettes, to come this way; for this
place has a bright future. The new
*ouncil which entered upon their
duties last night raised the saloon
licence to two thousand dollars each.

You shall doubtless be surprised to
hear from me all the wjty out here
in this land of Iron, Steel, and Cot
ton Manufacturies. Gadsden; Ala.
is situated on the Coosa river in
Etawah County, and is a wideawake
bustling town of about fifteen thous
and inhabitants and is complete!*
sourrounded by small manutactur-
ing towns which you reach by elect-
trie cars at small cost. .1 visited one
of them, Alabama City, three mites
away. Here I found a beautiful
little town, complete in every res
pect, about the size of Walterboro.
Directly at l, e depot is located the
large cotton mill of the Dwight
Manufacturing Co., and in sight' of
this can be seen the Iron and Steel
plants, all in full blast-going night
and day. You can see smoak stacks
in every direction and dense volu
mes of black smok belching there
from. This company is capatalized
at twenty million dollars.
Alabama City is a village for the
use of employees. It is beautifully
layed out by wide streets, and is
contposed of splendid houses a fact
you never see elafewhere, that no
two houses look alike, either in
architecture or in painting. These
houses contain from four to seven
rooms, are furnished with water and
electricity in fact are up-to-date in

Norfolk, Ya., July 20.—In a trol
ley accident on the Ocean View line to
the exposition, O. til. Adamson, of
Providence, R. I., was Instantly kill
ed, Mrs. W. J. Green, of Norfolk,
seriously Injured and several other
pasacnfcra slightly hurt. The car,
which was enroutv to Norfolk, Jumped
the track. While The crew fwas
working to get the car back la com
mission the lights on Lie curs. were
extinguished. When aftaifur car sud
denly bounded up in the rear, the paa-
