Dear Mr Editor.— I know that
the people of our county would like
to hear again from the garden spot
'of the county, so please let me have
only a small space, and I will give
them a few dots. v
One of the most important'is our
Sunday schools. One at the Baptist
church every Sunday morning,
with good workers and a faithful
supt., Prof A C Hiers, the other at
the school house led by Rev P C
Garris. This one should be specially
commended. Counting the fie— we
have the moat regular and most
prompt attendance of any school in
the state.
I know no <*>ther way by which
the young people of a community
may be judged them by the way
they attend and behave them selves
at Sunday school. This behtg true it
would be hard to find a better class
of young people than thoee of Smoaks
Our crops are fine considering the
cold April. I heard a man say today
that the good Lord did not want
some of the people of Smoaks to
get a head thoee who could not get
their phosphate in time to plant in
the warm days of March, so he sent
the cold to kill the crops of those
who had gotten their phosphate.
Now we are all in abreast and we
intend to keep the wheel turning
until about the 4th of July then* we
will say: “Roll back, time, roll back
for we had rather plow in July than
pull fodder.”
Our college boys and girls keep
coming in as the schools close. A

Saturday.
B L Padgett has gone to Columbia
to stand the State Board exammation
We hope that all our young doctrs
of S C will have good luck on their

Crops though young, are looking
very nicely. General Green is no ways
backwards m his appearenoe.
Merchants are doing fine here. I
am proud to say old Strikes is second
to none. Basinets and pleasure is
always rnshing.
John U Beach had business at
Hendersonville last week. ^
James W Sannders visited the
home ot John H Beech last Tuesday.
Misses Florrie and AI ease Black
were the guests of Misses Pattie and
Corajlsach last Sunday.
Messrs Thompson and Saunders
are doing a hustling business at this
place.
Miss Cattie Beach is spending
sometime with her sister Mrs C W
Atkin—n, at Ashton. We hope she
will have a nice time.

ness of J S Saunders. We hope he
will soon be well again.
Sometime ago our Mt Carmel oor
respondent in writing the lucky
marriages of all of W R Padgett’s

Death of Mr. A. Verdier.
Mr Augustus Verdier died at the
home of his daughter. Mrs. A. W.
Brabham. May 25, aged 80 years. He
was bom at Moliere, France, came
to Wal terboro, S. C. at 17 and for
more than 60 years lived in Colleton
county.
At the beginning of the war he
entered service iff Capt. Bellinger’s
company, served later under Capt.
Campbell, Colcock’s regiment, till
the do— of the war.
r After the war he —ttled at Cot
tage ville, and there conducted a con
siderable business for some years.
About 20 years ago he gave up busi
ness entirely.
With him flowers and music were
the great passions of his life. At one
time he had the most beautiful
flower garden for miles around. Be
ing hospitable, naturally he had a
great many visitors.
For some years he has been very
eeble, and death came to him as
sleep to a tired child He was buried
at the Brabham- Kearse cemetery,
where his wife is also buried. His
grave was covered with the beauti
ful flower! he loved so well in life
