PPE^IDENT SPENCEK KILLED. t Samuel Spencer, pre«i<lant of the Southern Railway Company, ami reooiMized as one of tha formoat man In the development of 'he Southern state*, waa killed in a rear-end collision be tween two fast south bound passenger trains, last Thnrsday morning near Lynchburg, Va. President Spencer and * part; of friends were on their way to Friendship, N. C., where they were going on a hunting trip. The entire party was killed. The canse of the wreck is supposed to be the careless ness of the operator at Rangoon who admitted three trains on the block .be fore he was notified it wa* clear. ANOTHER NEED. Row that we bare anothor coach on the train, it strikes ns n would be in order for the town or railroad antbori- ties, whoserer duty it is, to hare better lights around thf statiop when the train arrives in the evening. We have heard a number of complaints on this acore. Passengers alighting a dark night have to grope their way round in the darkness, and some of them experience difficulty in recognizing friends who come to meet them, or vice versa. So e we hope soon to see better lights sronud A. this public place, and to that end we refer this matter to the proper authori ties for their consideration. It has been suggested to ns that we recommend to the precinct chairmen of the Democratic clubs in the exempted portion of Colleton county that they call a meeting of their rcapective clubs for December 15, for the purpose of die- onasiog the stook law queation and the mes na by which this line fence is to be built and for the further purpose of selecting delegates to the mass-meeting which has been called to meet at Wal- terboro on the 18th. We heartily commend this plan. The object of the mass-meeting is v> devise means to bnild this line fence, and if it is left to the mass of people assembled at that meeting, our experience teaches os that nothing will be done. We would urge that this meeting be called by each precinct chairman and that one man for every twenty-five members le aQyft to Walterboro with instructions to jait as representatives of their precinct. / — ( * COURT EXPEN3E3. J We have been greatly impressed this term of court with the waste of the county’s resources. TUe same condi. tions exist every trrm. Cases of minor importance, that should never have been _ § ?nt np to court take up time and run the county to expense to pny for jo crj and witnesses. This should be reme died if possible- The legislature will soon convene and we would suggest for the consideration of our law-makers that such laws be passed as will in- oreane the jorisdiction of magistrates so that they mgy dispose of all but the amt important cam, or that a ooart he oatablishod ta try at aaj tim Reefy fountain Tea Raggett A Sury asdelw* Ur toy Pssrla Brines ftc?£tn HsJth sni BsmmS Vfcw.
